Gunbar. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 20 January 1899

Gunbar. ? ? Grazier' Cokbespoxdent. There ia little to tell you since I last wrote to you. The same old du t, and the same old drought ! -Though we have seen the old year out and the new year in, '98 is a year we part with without regret, and the depressing influence of a bad season hangs over us so thick that even a ' Mark Tapley' could not shake it off. Wo have, however, many things to be thankful for — I have not to record any deaths in our little community in 1898. Christmas week livened us up a bit. Tt is the one period of tho year that the Gnnbariti-s give up to enjoyment, thn annual races on Boxing Diy being the carnival of G unbar. The racecourse is sheltered hy beautiful shade trees, which, while affording ample shade, does not obscure the view. To tho traveller from the plains, Gunbar appears an oasis in the d serf, being surrounded by trees bearing a luxuriant fn'i igc, wliioh appear all the greener through the desolate state of the country. Gu ibar is also fortunite in h...

Ganmain. CRICKET. On Satuaday last a match was played on the local ground, in connection with th; Ganmain and District Cricket Association, between the Ganmain and Derrain cricket clubs, the game resulting ih a victory 'for the visitors. Our boys cordially welcomed and hospitab'y entertained the Derrainites, for which they received much complimen tary refereuce. The day was all that could ».-- doeiiwl for the uasti'ne aud there was a fair attendance of spectators. The neining ot the locals, with one or two exceptions, was brilliant, while that of the visitors is also worthy of commendation. Mr. W. Rousten captained the home boys aud Mr. J. Douglas the visitors. The former win ning the toss decided to sea 1 his men to the wickets, who totted up 70 in their innings, of which G. Allen made 30, W. Rousen 12, and C. DISTRICT NEWS. Brobenah. THE NEW YEAR. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 20 January 1899

DISTRICT NEWS. (FBOM OCB OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) Brobenah. THE KKW YEAR. The festive season of the year has paused and mankind has again settled down to his monotonous calling of rural bubh life. Stripping is finished, yielding, as a farmer said, f i oin three grains to lmlf a-bnshel per n'cre, but this the hardy sons of the soil would soon forget if the rain would only come down and break up this continuous drought. It would cheer their great hearts to struggle through another ye ,r. WINn. - Tho wind has recently blown up horrid dark clouds -of dust, but iu this locality It s'iMiip more than dust ; it Imb blown on a tongue and sent it awaggiug in an unruly manucr. PRICKED BY A PIN. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 20 January 1899

PRICKED BY A PIN. It docs not sound very alarming to hear of somebody being pricked by a pin, but of the most simple accidents we are c instantly hearing of fatal results. Sweet sixteen cutting her corns has often made a slip, nnd bled to death, and Death often creeps into the system at the point of a pin. Franklin, the oracle of pounds and pence, may have said with equal effect, for the guidance of future generations, take care of the pin pricks aud the sword thrusts will take care of themselves. There is far more danger to life iu pins than iu swords, as you can know from experience, as we h ive all seen blood poisoning set in from n simple hurt, but we only read of the men killed by tho sword. The groit majority aro dying of simple causes, and if you take cire of the small ailments you will never need to doctor the serious complaints. Mr. Robert G«off, employed at Cameron's tobaoe.i factory, and residing at 20 Little Gipp« Street, Suny Hills, gives good alvice how to treat your a...

In thiuliing about duty in regard to wages, we have to do primai ily with what is just, not so inuoh wilh whit is eenei-ouBy or philanthropic, or charitable. In this matter, an in all others, the old fashioned . proverb which hlds us be jnat before we are generous, Jiolds good. The question is not one of pity for the poor, or help for the need;, but of justice between man and man. I. We are constantly being told of the injustice Hint cxirts in our present social arrangements. We continually heir that the laborer ought to hive a larger -share of the wealth which his lalior creates. Viewed as ft Bimple question of justice ...
