: EMERALD. Htt,L ' ' THURSDAY; AUGUST 13, 1874. THE COUNCIL. The elections are over, and the Town Council will soon be called upon to give.effect to the now clearly expressed wisli of the* ratepayers in reference to the questions submitted to them during the contest. Happily, there was no difference of opinion worth mentioning avowed by any one of the candidates upon the leading questions of the day, so that we are justified in viewing the result of the contest as giving the unanimous consent of the ratepayers to the civic policy submitted to them. This policy we take to be—(1) The carrying out of his Worship the Mayor's (Cr. Page) Town Hall and •public Buildings scheme. No one will question the result of the election on this point. Both as regards the site selected and the general features of the scheme, the candidates were at one; and in no case did the public meetings which were held evoke any other than expressions of hearty ap proval of the scheme. Time was when the proposal to...

THE ELECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Record and Emerald Hill and Sandridge Advertiser — 13 August 1874

TH3 ELECTIONS. "You need- caa tell," was amply verified oa Tuesday last. No doubt the result lias beeii pleasing to a great number, although different to what was -anticipated, 'i'tio seeuo of the con test was remarkably quiet at .Emerald Hill. throughout tho day. There was none of that excitement which characterised . the ...municipal elections of former days; none of that lusty cheering as each cab, loaded with voters, arrived at the committee rooms ; neither were the streets thronged with anxious ratepayers, waiting for t-fro result of the poll to be declared. The small amount of interest felt by the electors was apparent iu tho small number of votes recorded compared .with last year's election. Throughout the day, the friends of each caudidate, as usual, expressed themselves confident of success. There is no doubt but that Air. Boyd's committee was the best organized and working one, and ifc is to this advantage that; ho owes tho satisfactory position he occupies ou the poll. Bo...
