Correspondence. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 20 January 1871

(To the Editor.) Sir-Our business men are not formed of the right material. They are made of mud, and would stick in their natural element till the end of time if some one did not help them out. We have a few exceptions, how ever, or rather, they are not all equally bad. I have been informed that there ere not three business men in Alexandra w'ho have tnl4tn a share in the Dauntless G.M. Com puny, U. T. Flat, and in consequence of this, the directors are going to. throw the thing up. 8ervcs our business men right. They will go sneaking behind other people's money-allow others to run the rik of prospecting, but won't spend a penny of -their own money. This is mean. Exeryr body feels certain there is plenty of gold in the flat, but very itew will pay down the cash, and here is the result-another sum. mer. passing away, and Alexandra thrown back twelve months. Go on at this snail pace. and the gold will remain where it is in the U. T. Flat safe for the next genera tion. I iam, Sir, &am...

(To the Editor.) Sir-It is time thlt the ratepayers had some reliable information as to the nctual 'state of the finnncial affairs of the Shire of Alexandra. Whether the statement is cor rect or faleo, that we have no money to spend on public worl;s for the ensuing year. is a question that we ought to have answered at once, and the sooner a statement showing bow matters actually stand is laid on the table the better for all concerned. PIlnLTSRIf D T.VIRY IP IDAY '' Vrlfte V?ncIt Oinr.ll.t' F RIDAY,JANUARY 20, 1871. IT is recorded that Nero fiddled whilst Rome was burning. Our Shire Councillors are playing at fiddlededee, fiddlededido, and fiddlcdedidum, whilst the rights and privi. leges of the ratepayers are being transferred to surrounding districts that have not an iota of the claim that Alexandra possesses, How is it that our neighbours at Mans field can get a County Court, Court of Mlines, Court of General Sessions, and now a resident Warden l The reason is simply this, that they have Councillors who instead of spending all their time in snubbing the Secretary, rewarding zealous electioneering friends, and such like, make it their busi ness to look after those matters that will materially advance the interests of the people and tlhe planc they represent. We have no wish to take from the people of Mansfield any advantage they enjoy, on the contrary, we say lot them go on and prosper by all means; but can it b...

MANSFIELD VALUATION. THE 20 PER CENT. AND OTHER MATTERS (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 20 January 1871

MANSFIELD VALUATION. THE 20 PER CENT. AND OTHER MATTERS (To thA Ed~Ltor.) Sir-Historical romanc 's are, no doubt, pleasant Vehicles for imparting a knowledge of past events, and prove eminently useful, provided the superstructure of fiction do not crush to distortion 'the foundation of fact upon which it is erected. A distortion of the real state of affairs, equivalent to a misrepresentation, however, does appear in some novels of the kind, nrl may be 'vari ously traced, or, at any rate, attribute.l to either ignorance, prejudice, or want of memory in the writers. This reflection has arisen partly out of my having been informed by credible persons that the report of the President's speech at the last Mansfield Shire Council meeting, as reported in the Mwans field Indepedlent of the 13th instant, was in correct and exaggerated, and partly because, not knowing the part said to be incorrectly reported (if I except ' illiterato" for " illi beral"), I am bound, in justice to myself, to r...

Local and General News. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 20 January 1871

In a late Gazette the boundlsrles of lhd Mansfield General Sessions District were described as including the greater portion of the Shire of Alexandra, It occurs to us that it will be necessary to reappoint our local J.P,'s for the new district, inasmuch as under the regulations justices can only act within the General Sessions District for which they have been appointed. Our first patient in the Alexandra HI-os pital was discharged on Monday last. The young man, whose name is - Williatt, aged 90, of respectable appearance, was found by the police in a hult near Mlerton in a dying state. and brought into the lock-up. The case was brought before our local Court, and although one individual, whose bump of benevolence is very low, snubbed Constable Whyte for bringing the man in, he was, nevertheless, provided for. Our temporary Hospital was furnished with every neces. sary, and under the able care of Dr Fergus son, the poor 'fellow was delivered from the jaws of deuth, and inthe short ...

(To theI Editor oJ tke Mansfield Itdepen dent, per Javor the Alexand.ra ~Times.) - ir.--.HI in. published in your columns the letter of " Indicator," I trust you will not deny the person so shamefully villified in that production an opportunity of ofttfer ing a few observations on that mendacious and ruffianly production. I have debated with myself tile advisa bility of noticing, even by the slightest scratch of a pen, the filthy details of that letter, or attemlpting to treat seriatiUm the gross falsehoods, and malicious and cowardly insinuations contained therein, for without one solitary eoception, every statemont in that letter relating to ome is utterly false, and every insinuation an imbecile and das tardly slander. The pitiful and barefaced lie relative to NIr Langtree is worthy of the mean-spirited scoundrelism of its author, who, if I mis take not, is distinguished from all others of his name by the cognomen of " Wallan Wnllan." Ilcllooways Oiniment and Pill ,-- Scarlatina - Whoopiug.Cough.- These diseascs of early life are now o:using foarful havoc amongst children. If HIolloway's Ointment be well rubbed upon the throat and chest, in such cases, the symptons will be moderated, and the danger averted. Any intelli. gent person can efeetually apply this soothing roe medy. A little attention to the directions enveloping each pot and box of Holloway's medicaments, will enable anyone to prevent the disastrous consequen ces daily resulting from neglecting infantile disor ders till it is too lnte. and the little sufferer refuses food and sinks.
