News from Our Colonies [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 7 March 1896

News from Our Colonies We are thankful to be of use to so man . people who are seeking new homes . Also to turn the tide back from city to country . • The cities are congested and overcrowded . It is appalling to think of tlie vast numbers of honest people who want work and cannot find it , who arc huddled together in the cities while millions of acres remain unoccupied and untilled . Ae . cording to the report of the county agent for Cook county , in which Chicago is located , for ISSTJ he furnished more or less sustenance to upwards of 200 , 000 people in this city alone . This does not include the assistance rendered by the associated charities , churches , benevolent socio . ties , etc ., and individuals . Adding the charitable work accomplished by these other agencies and it is safe to say that one-third of the people of Chicago at the present time are more or less dependent upon public charity to keep life within them . It is needless to say that if these people were in the co...

W §^ SmWT * % tMi ^ Cs ^ iT : irr-wi fflTOi ^ mSjl UE * - The Reason Why By Rita Rhea . Why is it , when one s soul seems dull , Why is It , when the heart is full , And almost bursting with its fears , TIs eased by a generous fall of tears ? Why Is It , when we feel so sad , That all looks gray and nothing g . ad , That roaming by the flowers , and brook , Seems like a leaf torn from God s Book ? Why is It , when our life s sweet plan , Of doing for our fellow man , Is dashed ln pieces by their hands , And like the house built on the sands , The great foundation formed by worth . Is raised again , unto the earth ? Say , Master , still tis in tby hands . TIs only this . Tis nothing more , God kindly opens back the door Of our hard hearts , and by this move Lets ln the rare sunshine of Love ; Love clears the soul , whene er tis dull , Love warms the heart when it is full . Tis the love that God holds in his hand That makes us know our fellow man . We realize the truth oft told , That...

Some Good Flowers [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 7 March 1896

Some Good Flowers THE time will soon be here when we must select our flower seeds or plants and , unless , we have plenty of money for such things , the gorgeous catalogues are a source of great bewilderment to us , and we are apt to choose from some of these wonderfully colored plates , some flowers of whose habits and requirements we are ignorant , while we leave out others which we might have had at less expense , and which would have been much more satisfactory to us . Knowing how often I have been helped in my selections by the experience of others I send a few notes which I trust may benefit some one . If I had only one dime to spend for flower seeds I would get a package of mixed seeds from some reliable florist ; and I would plant them as soon as the ground is warm enough and dry enough to work , iu a shallow box about 3 x 4 feet , filled with loose , rich soil , and set at the south side of some building . From a bed like this I once got several lovely chrysanthemums , a be...
