Be Companions . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

Be Companions . It is wise for a mother to take time to dress and be fair in her children s eyes ; to read , for their sake , to learn to talk well and to live in to-day . The circle the mother draws around her is more wholesome for the child than the one he has to make for himself , and she is responsible for his social surroundings . It is not easy to be the childs most interesting companion and to make home his strongest magnet , but the mothers who have done this have been the mothers of good men .

"The New England Primer . " [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

The New England Primer . A friend told me a story once about a traveler who , just at the close of the Revolutionary war , was crossing the Fishkill Mountains at the time when it took about a hat full of money to buy a breakfast . He had no money , but he had a copy of a famous little book , one of the earliest printed books in this country , called The New England Primer , which contained the shorter catechism , the sum of the Presbyterian faith . It was a little book , but it had pictures with rhymes , such as In Adam s fall We sinned all . He counted out a number of these pages after eating his breakfast , and handed them to the old lady who had served him . She didnt know much about reading , but she took them , looked at them closely , spelled out a few pious words , and said : That s all right ; I am glad Congress has at last got some money with a little religion in it .

MR . THOMPSON AND THE MOS -QUITOES . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

MR . THOMPSON AND THE MOSQUITOES . BY ALLAN FORMAN . The other afternoon an odd-looking person entered my office . The figure and general appearance was Mr . Thompson s , but the face was one mass of red blotches , swollen and almost unrecognizable . I stared at him a moment before I could determine who it was . He bore the scrutiny with bad grace , and exclaimed , Well , what s the matter now ? Didnt you ever see me before ? Not when you looked as you do now , I replied . What have you been doing with yourself ? I havnt been doing anything . I went out in Jersey to spend Sunday and have a good time , that s all , answered Mr . Thompson . Mosquitoes ? I inquired . Mr . Thompson nodded . Tell me about it , I urged . At first Mr . Thompson was very reluctant , but after some persuasion he consented . Mr . Thompson had a day or two on his hands which he did not exactly know what to do with , so he concluded to spend them at a quiet little village among the Jersey hills . They told me t...

Pearl Oysters , [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

Pearl Oysters , In the Gulf of California there are extensive fisheries . The pearls are found inside of a species of oyster that grows at the bottom of the Gulf . The district is about 300 miles in length , extending out from the shore some ten miles . Most of the fishing is done by Mexicans or halfbreed Indians , who dive for them from boats . The divers take heavy stones in their hands to help them reach the bottom . They also carry baskets which they fill with oysters . A good diver can go down fifty feet , and remain under water from two minutes to two minutes and a quarter . Diving is not an unhealthy business , and there is no danger from sharks . A more extensive business is carried on by means of divers clad in marine armor . These go in schooners fitted out with all the necessaries for a voyage of four or five months . The armor-clad divers sometimes go down more than 100 feet deep , but the pressure is so great that it produces rheumatism , and the armordivers rarely live...

So Tour Best . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

So Tour Best . A gentleman once said to a physician , I should think that at night you would feel so worried over the work of the day that you would not be able to sleep . My head hardly touches the pillow , till I fall asleep , replied the physician . I made up my mind , he continued , at the commencement of my professional career , to do my best under all circumstances ; and so doing , I am not troubled by any misgivings . This is a good rule for us to follow . Too many are disposed to say , No matter how I do this work now ; next time Ill do better . The praotice is as bad as the reasoning . No matter how I learn this lesson in the lower class ; when I get into a higher department , then Ill study . As well might the mother in knitting stockings say , No matter how the tip is done ; even if PI drop a stitch now and then , Ill do better when I get farther along . What kind of a stocking would that be ? As well might the builder say , I dont care how I make the foundation of this h...

This and That . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

This and That . Dr . Isaac Watts , the famous writer of hymns , had the habit , when a child , of speaking in rhymes , even without knowing it . As the propensity increased his father was very much displeased , and threatened to whip his son unless he left off making verses . One day , when about putting his threat into execution , Isaac burst into tears , fell on his knees before his angry parent , and cried out , Dear father , on me pity take . And I will no more verses make .

LITERATURE . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886

LITERATURE . Book Notices . A rich contribution to far-west sketches is before us in Hunting Trips of a Jtanohman , by Theodore Boosevelt . There may be at first some skepticism about the genuineness of the ranchman when we remember that Mr . Boosevelt is the wealthy New York politician and Member of Congress , now Chairman of the Foreign Belations Committee . But as you read you find evidence on almost every page that the writer has seen whereof he affirms , and in the hunting adventures could truthfully say : Magna pars fui . The illustrations are not only manifestly from the life—the author stating that the seven heads of large game are faithfully copied from the originals , shot by himself , and now in his possession—but wrought out and engraved by the best artists of America . Some of Mr . Boosevelt s letters from the Northwest were published in periodicals . It must be acknowledged that the somewhat famous young politician has not a little of the gifts of a successful writer ....
