UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 5 October 1880

We have received a rather lengthy communication in regard to the death of J . W . Lamson . Although a notice of his death has already appeared in . these columns , we will give it a place in our next number . While attending the University this young man endeared himself to many of our readers by the noble qualities of his heart and mind . His name is worthy of being an echo and a light to us who remain to toil within the shadow of this life . Now that all are well started in the work of the year , few hours of the day will come to any one and not find some regular duty to be performed in them . Yet all have a little leisure which they can hold sacred from text-books and reference books , and g ive to something no less important . That something is exercise . Our experience has been that a good , brisk walk , or the participation in some out-door sport each day is as necessary for the health and good spirits of a student as his dinner is . The eternal bending over books which many p...

THE DEMAGOGUE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 5 October 1880

THE DEMAGOGUE . This is an age of conflict and of doubt—As you have guessed , perhaps , or have been told Ere I thus boldly let the secret out—When creeds are crumbling , men are bought and sold , And Judas sells his brothers name for gold . Peace to the war of science with the creeds ! For now our eyes are on our brothers deeds , And we are happy when our vision spies Some shadowy motes within our brothers eyes . In strifes of tongues with warring words we mix And shout and rend each other as possessed Of—well there is no need to say the rest—And call this modern Babel politics . Of old , this word meant more than wrangling spite Which does a wrong to set some other right ; It had a hint of pomp and ermined state , And if its votaries were not wholly pure They had at least the air of being great , And ignorance neer became the nations cynosure . In that old time of which I speak , suppose Some noisy fellow vexed a king s repose , Did all the nation rise in scoffs and jeers ? No ; t...

ON NEUTRAL GROUND . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 5 October 1880

ON NEUTRAL GROUND . I he hour ot the night which follows that devoted to my last lesson for the next day , I consecrate to sweet and slippered ease . The books are pushed aside and fancies come thronging . - Thus , with feet tossed heavenward and backward-dipping chair , I close my eyes and think . I will have to admit that at these times my thoughts are never very brilliant or profound , for they rather take to themselves the nature of harlequins in their antics , and , hoping to catch my judgment napping , try to juggle me in all sorts of ways . First , I will rind myself perched on a pedestal of doubt , like a regular St . Simeon Stylites . In that position I can imagine no good coming to myself from my four college years , but rather find them a period in which at a considerable expense I am made dissatisfied with many of the most useful kinds of hard honest work . I find that I have been passively letting the world go by me , and feel a strong impulse to rush forth and begin my...

PEAR BLIGHT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 5 October 1880

PEAR BLIGHT . A short notice of Prof . Burrill s discovery of the cause of pear blight was given in the last number of THE ILLINI , but a fuller account of it may be interesting . The cause of the disease is a bacterium , a fungus ot the very lowest class . It has long been known that bacteria produce the putrefaction of animal flesh , the souring of milk , and many other phenomena of this kind . They are also believed , and perhaps in some cases proved , to produce diseases of animals ; but it was not until the past summer that they were known to produce diseases ot plants , and we may congratulate ourselves that our University has the honor of the discovery . It is one of the greatest scientific discoveries of the time , and scientific men and the press throughout the country are enthusiastic over it . The method of investigation is somewhat as follows : When the blight appeared in the early part of the summer , very thin sections of the diseased branches were examined under a hig...

ILLINOIS COLLEGIATE CONTEST . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 5 October 1880

ILLINOIS COLLEGIATE CONTEST . The seventh annual contest of the Illinois Collegiate Association will be held in Galesburg , Wednesday evening , Octqber 13 . The complete success of the last contest , and the increasing interest in the association , make good the prospects for the finest of meetings . The competition of the oratorical talent of the colleges of the state insures a good entertainment . Added to this is the opportunity for acquaintance and fellowship among the students of the different colleges . The student knows little of other colleges than his own . It is expected Jacksonville , Monmouth , Bloomington and Chicago will each send delegations of fifty or more students . The State University will not be behind , and already arrangements are being perfected for the trip . The faculty have kindly granted leave of absence for two days to all who attend the contest . The obliging managers of the I . B . & W . railroad have offered low rates for a special car , s...

A SENIOR AMONG THE BOOKS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 5 October 1880

A SENIOR AMONG THE BOOKS . Since first I entered the library , a timid prep , and gazed in mute amazement at the shelves of books which rose around me to the very ceiling , I have had a deep veneration for the stores of knowledge which were therein contained . I have daily longed to explore every corner of those many shelves . The mysterious and unknown recesses of the alcove have had a charm for me . But my only source of acquiring knowledge in regard to the contents of those shelves was the precarious one of leaning over the railing and straining my eyes to catch the titles of the nearest books . All of them were held sacred from my touch unless I chose to ask blindly of the librarians for what I thought I wanted . This , taken all together , was an unsatisfactory way of drinking at the plentiful fountain of learning which was in sight but not in reach . I do not make any complaints , for no one was to blame for this . So it was with delight that 1 received the librarian s invitat...
