Tho Cily Council met yesterday afternoon with Mayor Thompson in the chnir, nnd Aldermen Beat, Gorman, Iiddlemnn, Slaughter and Golledgo present. The minutes of tho last meeting wcro read and approved. Tie finance committee reported favora bly on $125.87 worth of bills and they were ordered paid. A motion had previously carried declaring tho ofllee of cily engineer vacant. Tho same was reconsider od nnd Mr. Hugh Johnston still holds tho office. Alderman Slaughter, chairman of tho flro committee, reported that ho had practically rented tho Whiteman building on North Washington Btreet, aud asked the Council to approve his work. He was ompowerod to make tho best deal ho could in this line. Ho was also instructed to purchase another horae to boused in tho fire department, as one of the horses '13 unfit for that purpose.
