Let the course of thy fame be the path of the Shiniifg'ever more bright to the glorious day! Thus sang an ancient Sibyl in her cave. Ere centuries rolled adown the stream of time, As, gazing o'er the blue Atlantic wave. She hailed the advent of a power sublime. She saw the glories of Columbia shine Like stars that glitter in the midnight gloom Like Banquo's offspring, an unending lino Still stretching onward "to the crack of doom." From Palos' ancient port three vessels glide To seek and find a world to fame unknown While skeptics doubt, while courtly fools de ride, And hope and courage shine in one alone. THETRANSCRIPT C. H. DAVIDSON,Editorgf^^Proprietor. AUSTIN, MINNESOTA: THURSDAY MORNING, JULY 24, 1879. Pt|e'i Candidacy. Sherman Page Las announced himself an independent candidate tor re-elec tion to the position which he now holds. He cannot now withdraw from the field, he says, "without endangering the prin ciples of reform which he has always adhered to and advocated, nor without giving anew lease of power to the dan gerous combinations which have sought to crush him." Having satisfied himself that the Republican party of his district will do nothing for him, he has decided "that a judicial officer cannot honestly be dependent on the manipulations of party caucuses or conventions." Seven \ear9 of experience has cliauged his mind on this subject. If any amount of "manipulating" would help his case in the least, he wouldn't feel so, but it will not. He will not be a pnrty candidate, for the same reason that Jack wouldn't cat his supper. Page is an expert, how ever, at political fi...

AN AUGUST DAT. BY AMCK M. KDDY. Over the fields by winding ways We wandered on together Under the flashing azure skies, In a hush of August weather Round about ua, alar and near, We heard the locust humming, And the asters starring the ionely path Laughed out to see us earning. Bird songs out of the sunlit oak Fell rippling through the shadow, Like a spear of flame the cardinal ilower Burned out along the meadow. Into our hearts the blithe wind blew, Its own freegladnesa giving, And all thingelaughed mthe happy earth, For the pure, sweet joy of living. Two roamed on with their eyes alight, And their hearts too still for laughter, Two in a revel of golden life, Look neither before nor after. One went drenmiug with downcast face Through tho hush of the woodland cover, But one praised God froui a trembling.heart That shadow of pain was over, —Sunday Afternoon. AGRICULTURAL. THIS greatest profit always comes from early feeding, and it is retained by full feeding afterwards. BY growing a...
