fz) k 3aUg tetowmt. ASTORIA, OllEGON: SUNDAY. ..TUNE 21. 18S5 THE MYSTIC POWER. There is a subtle, mysterious influ ence about some persons that is txul remarkable- One of the singular foaturcs about it is that those pos sessing it have little or no control over it, and thoe affected by it have no power to resist it. "What this power is. or whence it comes, is the mystery. It 13 generally believed that mind has influence over mind, independent of the "will of the person concerned. A great many say they can feol the pressure of certain ones without seeing or knowing they are near, while almost every one is more or less affected by the pressure of others, either strangers or friends. Thus it may be traced down to what is generally called like and dislike. The plain truth is that there is often less mutual affection between com parative strangers. It is generally supposed that twins are devotedly at tached to each other, but such is not the case. Even the Siamese twins were constantly ...

Noltncr, the late editor a:id propri etor, who has sold out to Mr. S. TJ. Pottengill, a gentleman of ripe ex perience and a writer of more than ordinary force; ill a brief salutatory he states his intention of making some changes in the paper, that in his opinion will make it more val uable. In his valedictory Mr. Noltner says that he has been publishing Demo cratic newspapers in Oregon for twonty-seven years, and implies that he has amassed nothing during that time more solid or tangible than a large accumulation of cosily ex perience. It must be tremendous hard work to run a Democratic newspaper: run njng a newspaper of any kind is gen erally and correctly considered to be toilsome bnsines, but to conduct a Democratic newspaper must, indeed, be fearfully wearing.
