ANCIENT EGYPT. —The reckless prodigality with which, in ancient Egypt, tiio upper classes squandered away the labor and lives of the people is perfectly startling. In this respect, as the monuments yet remaining abundantly prove, they stand alone and without a rival. We may lorm some idea of the almost incredible waste, when we hear that '2,000 men were occupied for three years in carrying a single stone lrotn Elephantine to Sais; that the canal of the Red Sea alono cost the lives of one hundred and twenty thousand Egyptians ; ami that to build one of the Pyramids required the labor of .300,000 men for twenty years. A KIND HEART. —Lord Nelson, wheu forced to see men whipped on board of the ship, ascended to the deck precipitately, read rapidly and in an agitated voice the rules of the service, nnd then cried: "Uoatswain do your duty." "Admiral, pardon!" Lord Nelson would then look around at his officers; all keeping silence he would say: ''What! none of you, gentlemen ; not one lias...

"DEAD MEAT." —'-A Citizen,''in yesterday's Democrat, informs the public that some butcher ''is picking up dead lauibs and sheep on the plains and serving them in the market. On one occasion." says the writer, ,- he found a dead lamb, partly rotten, and, cutting it in two, he threw one part away, and took the other to his stall to sell to customers." Now, in the first place, we cannot believe that there is a butcher in the city so depraved as to be guilty of any such practice; but if there is, we would not give the toss of a copper for the difference between him and the ''Citizen" who is cognizant of the fact, and ails to have the offender arrested. The butchers of Marysville are, as u general thing, a veryrespectable class of people, and it there is one among them guilty of the crime alleged, he should be brought before the bar of justice, and we know ol none so competent to perforin that duty to the public and the innocent portion ot butchers, as the person who writes over the sign...

The Klectlon of Ta-tiay. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 19 March 1860

The Klectlon of Ta-tiay. We have endeavored, and are still persistently endeavoring, to maintain a permanent straddle of the corporative political fence. Professionally, we are possessed of "nary politic." We look out calmly upon the boiling and surging sea which is being tossed and rolled by the contending Democracy and People, and feel as little concern in the result of their disputations and warrlngs ns we should were we the sole owner of a tempesttossed fishing smack, fully insured in the soundest of sound assurance companies of Hartford or London. In ourgratuitous magnanimity, we made mention, in detail, on Saturday, of the standard rush-lights of Democracy, offering themselves a» Alderinanic sacrifices in the various wards of our too happy village. It may be expected that we shall similarly favor the candidates upon the People's ticket. But we shall not do it. A good thing loses its virtue by being too frequently repeated. It is well enough to plant propagating vegetable up-sh...

Like Old Times. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 19 March 1860

Like Old Times. The Sacramento bout landed nt the lower Plaza on Saturday evening. Aiming old Marysvillians, it is pleasant to be reminded of the nine or ten year old times when steamboats used to find daily de.--1 inalion at the bank of the Yuba. Occasionally we are reminded of the time when the Plaza was the watery battle place of "the Russian army ;" when yawls deposited passengers 011 the balcony of the Merchants' Hotel : when Chinamen caught sturgeon and perch out of the back door of the Theatre, and when an enterprising person established an unlicensed ferry from the Western House corner to Cushing's old St. Charles Hotel and the then deputy Federal official Dougherty's postoftice. Those were times that tried mens gum boots, you bet! We entertain a lurking remembrance of decorations in oleaginous pigments 111 the Pixley k Smith temple of Thespis—the old shebang of a theatre, built by Bill Smith—now William Wilson Lawton — and Seymour l'ixley. Seymour used to say, "uaow boys, I...

Solomon Sucker In Alaryavllle. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 19 March 1860

Solomon Sucker In Alaryavllle. SOLOMON BKEKS FOR KMPLOYMKNT. Got up yesterday morning; found I had but ten dollar* left; started in search of employment; came to the Fountain Saloon; felt rather warm, concluded to go in and take something; something consisted of a glass of ltiger with a tiy in it. Stated my case to the bar-keeper ; barkeeper recommended me to apply to an Intelligence oflice. Said I was not acquainted; asked where I could find one; told me there was one in the vicinity of Second and C streets. Left for Intelligence oflice ; soon arrived at that interesting locality. Beheld bulletin board on the corner; board covered with notices. Looked to see what was wanted. First notice—"Wanted, a wood-chopper." Second notice—"Wood-choppers wanted.'' Third rrotice—"Wanted, two choppers." Looked at the other side of the board; wanted more wood-choppers. Concluded that wood must be several dollars a cord, if not tnore. Pale man, with moustache, came to the door; invited me to walk i...
