ONE BY ONE. [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 2 November 1855

ONE BY ONE. On* by one the sands are flowing, One by one the moment* fall; Some are coming, come are going, Do not strive to grasp them all. One by one thy duties wait thee, Let thy whole strength go to each, Let no future dreams elate thee, Learn thou first what thete can tench. One by one (bright gifts from Heaven) Joys are sent the* here below, Take them readily when given, Ready, too, to let them go. One by one thy griefs shall meet thee, Do not tear a thronging bnnd; One will fade as others greet thee, Shadows passing through the laud. Do not look at life's long sorrow; See how small each moment's pain, God will help thee for to-morrow, Every day begin again. Every hour that fleets so slowly, Has its task to do or bear; Luminous the crown and holy, If thou set each gem with care. Do not linger with regretting, Or for passion hours despond ; Nor, the daily toil forgetting, Look too easily beyond. Hours are golden links, Gcd's token, Reaching Heaven, but one by one Take them, les...

The Poor Governess. [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 2 November 1855

The Poor Governess. FRANK HARWOOD <: How perfectly ridiculous ! —did you see Ellen Stanley at Mrs. Mayhew's, Louisa? asked the haughty and fashionable Lama Adams of her companion, as they sat employed with their delicate embroidery the day after an elegant party." "Yes. And 1 was perfectly astonished that she presumed to attend a fashionable party, like Mrs. Mayhew's. If I was nothing wore than she is, I should not dare to be seen by my ac quaintances; and yet she goes to parties, as though she was of great consequence." " None invite her except Mrs. Mahew, and Mrs. Clifton, and a few who pretend to think something of her, because they say she is intelligent and refined. For my part I consider her uncommonly vulgar for mingling in fashionable life," said Mrs. Adams. "Who is it, Laura, that is so vulgar?" said Mr. Adams who had been dozing on the sofa, as she heard Laura's conservation. "Oh! only the governess at Mrs. Mayhew's" said Laura. "Well, what of that? What is ther...

One of "Betty's" Admirers. [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 2 November 1855

One of "Betty's" Admirers. Sutteb County, Oct. 14, 1855. Messrs. Editors: Sirs—l see by your last issue, now before me, that ''Betty," with her characteristic kindness, has condescended to notice my humble effort directed to her praise. Now, I hardly know how to proceed. My first impulse upon reading her beautiful reply, was. to petition you for her private address, that 1 might open a private correspondence, and. like Ovid, lay siege to her heart through the medium of sonnet; but upon a second thought. I have concluded that as the days of chivalry and romance are past, and bloomers, woman's rights, and strong minded women have taken their place, that it would be vain to expect a young lady, though possessing all the virtues of olden dayi, to surrender her fort of love to a more unsubstantial tissue of love sonnets, without knowing the strength and valor of the besieging party; I therefore think it better to avail myself of the frank invitation offered me me to visit Martinfield ; a...

Home and Woman. [Newspaper Article] — California Farmer and Journal of Useful Sciences — 2 November 1855

Home and Woman. If ever there has been a more touching and eloquent eulogium upon the charms of home, and its dearest treasure, woman, than is contained in the following extract from the Inquirer, it has not been our fortune to meet it:— "Our homes—what is their corner-stone bnt the virtue of woman? And on what does the social well-being rest but on our homes? Must we not trace all other blessings of civilized life to the door of our private dwellings? Are not our hearth-stones guarded by the holy forms of conjugal, filial, and parental love, the corner stones of Church and State-more sacred than eithermore necessary than both? Let our temples crumble and our academies decay—let every public edifice, our halls of justice, and our capiials of State, be leveled with the dust—but spare our homes. Man did not invent and he cannot improve or abrogate them. A private shelter to cover in two hearts dearer to each other than all the world ; high walls to exclude the profane eyes of every hu...
