Times Photo AUSTIN -- State represen- tative John Wilson's outlook for the 65th Legislature was guardedly optimistic. as he surveyed the wide range of crucial -- and con- troversial -- issues facing Texas lawmakers. "One thing that we've failed in as a legislature, especially in a time of surplus, is in solving the school finance problem," Wilson stated in a recent interview with the TIMES. Ad valorem taxes, high- way funding, and his own "sunset" legislation were other areas that Wilson highlighted as having particular significance this session. The Caro>nals were in front 14 - 12 at the end of the first period, and by the end of the third had expanded that lead to 49 - 42. During the fourth quarter, the fired-up Del Valle squad expanded their lead. Del Valle took advantage of Elgin's sloppy passes through the Cardinals' zone defense and the 'Cats not snagging rebounds to wrap up a 75 - 54 win. JANUARY 20.1977 Informative Sessions Attended Two Smithville school personnel, Mrs. Griesen- beck. the school nurse, and Mrs. Kim Milstead, a special education teacher, attended workshops last week at the Municipal Auditorium in Austin. Mrs. Milstead participated in discussions on the requirements and needs of the school and staff. A good plan of staff development is required in Texas schools. Mrs. Milstead remarked, "They told us what we needed to do, and we're doing it." She also attended a work- shop for special education. JANUARY 20, 1977 Fire Destroys Rod Barn • Ml- .* . SMITHVILLE -- Last Wednesday morning, Jan. 12 at 11:30 a.m., the Smith- ville fire alarm sounded. The Smithville Volunteer Fire Department immediate- ly responded to the call and headed for the A.J. Rod Ranch on the Rosanky Road. One of the ranch's barns was aflame. When the first fire truck arrived the roof and several stacks of hay were engulfed in flames. Housed in the barn were several calves, a I year old filly race horse, a diesel tractor, equipment, and a complete tack room. A ranch hand managed to get the calves and the race horse out of the barn before the entire inside of the barn was enflamed. Times Photo Gordon Israel made a big change in his life this past year - he chose to quit his unit director position at Travis State School and open a business in Bastrop, which he formally opened this past weekend as Water Street Frame Shop. Gordon says he's the best boss he's ever had, this being the first time he has worked for himself. "It was a big step leaving an estab- lished and good-paying job." Gordon reflected. "The step was big -- but the decision wasn't that hard. I found out I liked working with wood and working with my hands more than pushing pencils."
