loo news "I want them to know that we extend love and warmth and welcome just the way they are," said Collier, who has a 27-year-old gay son. "They will always have a home with PFLAG." Collier said she and the others received late notice about the workshop, otherwise they would have managed to recruit far more people to the protest. Julie Adkins, senior pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church and another coordinator of the protest, said she and members of her congre- gation received a flier inviting them to the work- shop." "We were appalled by it," Adkins said. "We decided that we would just show up." Adkins said she and others considered attend- ing the workshop. "We thought about registering and being obnoxious all day, but we decided that we didn't want to listen to that all day long." Jeff Mean said he was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Dallas and the workshop reminded him of a bad experience at the church. He was baptized there in 1976 and left when he was 14. national news leff Neal Group "The Hardest Working Team in Real Estate" Open Sun 2-4pm ederal court avoids decision on gay marriage 3-judge panel advises California couple to await outcome of California legislation challenging the state's gay marriage ban By David Kravets Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO —A federal appeals court sidestepped whether it was unconstitutional under federal and state law to deny gays and les- bians the right to marry, leaving the issue to state courts to decide. The case, brought by two gay Orange County, California, men who were denied a marriage license, leaves Massachusetts as the only U.S. state allowing same-sex marriage. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the couple should await the outcome of California litigation challenging the state's law banning gay nuptials. In the decision handed down May 5, Judge Ferdinand Fernandez wrote that it is "difficult to imagine an area more fraught with sensitive social policy consider...

Hawaii, Vermont pass legislation protecting transgender people Hawaii and Vermont both recently passed his- toric legislation to protect transgender people and gender-nonconforming people from discrimina- tion, according to Simon Aronoff with the National Center for Transgender Equality. Hawaii's second transgender-inclusive bill, explicity prohibiting discriminatory practices in public accommodations based on "gender identi- ty or expression or sexual orientation, passed into law on May 3. The bill passed into law with- out the signature of Gov. Linda Lingle, who last year vetoed a bill banning anti-trans discrimina- tion in employment. On May 5, the Vermont Legislature approved a bill prohibiting discrimination based on a per- son's gender identity or expression in employ- ment, housing and public accommodations. If Gov. Jim Douglas allows the measure to become law, it will make Vermont the ninth state to pass a specifically trans-inclusive anti-discrimination law. Vermont's hate ...

In line with local requirements, organizers will request a permit for the parade on May 15. They should receive an official response by May 17. If the permit is denied, organizers plan to make the final decision on whether to march just three hours before the parade's planned start time, dur- ing the closing session of a Pride Week anti- homophobia conference. "Over the last days, and despite the fact that our site, www.gayrussia.ru/en, was hacked and offline for 12 hours, we have received many messages of support from inside Russia of people — gays and straights — who said that initially they did not plan to come for the Pride, but that ...

JAPAN Continued from Page 1 following year. The advances — the result of long years of work behind the scenes — have given Japan's sexual minorities rising self-confidence and a greater willingness to come out of the closet despite the country's long-prized conformity and disdain for displays of individuality. "These changes have been way overdue," Fujio said at a recent interview in Tokyo. "I think the law got people thinking, 'If the country has recognized these people, they must be acceptable after all.'" Greater visibility and legal change are part of a general trend in Japan toward more personal freedom. Technology and tradition have also played a role. The Internet has spread information about alternative lifestyles to people who in previous generations would have been isolated. Meanwhile, Japan's lack of deeply-rooted moral or religious censure of sexual minorities has made the transition easier. The rising visibility is a sharp turnaround for those like Fujio, who grew up in...

Iranian government hackers, journalist and blog- ger Doug Ireland reported in Gay City News. "The goal of the hack attack was to bury news of, and stifle protest about, the Islamic Republic of Iran's massive anti-gay pogrom," Ireland said. Among the sites taken down were those of the Persian Gay and Lesbian Organization and the British gay-rights group OutRage. The front page of PGLO's site has been replaced by a "parked" page with links to gay shopping. OutRage's site displays only the line: "No website is configured at this address." OutRage has doggedly pursued the story of Iran's alleged ongoing executions of men who the group says were found guilty of engaging in gay sex. The group's latest research is online at http://petertatchell.net/international/iranstate- murder.htm. Ireland said websites of Iranian exile groups also have been hacked. heatthnews HIV testing could become routine for adults and teens Federal health officials say they would like HIV testing to become as common as cholesterol checks By Mike Stobbe Associated Press ATLANTA — Testing for the AIDS virus could become part of routine physical exams for adults and teens if doctors follow new U.S. guidelines expected to be issued by this summer. Federal health officials say they would like HIV testing to be as common as a cholesterol check. The guidelines for routine testing would apply to every American ages 13 to 64, according to the proposed plan by the U.S. Centers for Disease control and Prevention. One-quarter of the 1 million Americans with the AIDS virus don't know they are infected, and that group is most responsible for HIV's spread, CDC officials said. "We need to expand access to HIV testing dra- matically by making it a routine part of medical care," said the agency's Dr. Kevin Fenton. CDC officials presented the plans at a scientif- ic confere...

sion or overwhelming self-consciousness — and finish with its aphrodisiac properties that make users hypersexual, able to engage in marathon sessions of often rough sex, and you have what many call the ultimate gay drug. "The circuit party scene and the bath house scene have become avenues to introduce meth on a grand scale," said Randy Martin, director of the Arlington-based Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the Pride Institute, an addiction recovery organiza- tion. "Being that those two environments are set up for long hours of partying and long hours of sex- ual activity, meth has become a tool to first enable someone to participate at that level phys- ically; secondly, anything that stands in the way of a person's participation such as low self- esteem or depression, meth takes care of," Martin said. In fact, a 2001 study by the San Francisco Department of Public Health reported that 43 percent of U.S. circuit party attendees took crys- tal meth. Within the gay community, meth does n...
