NOTES AND NEWS [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian — 9 April 1864

NOTES A.NI3 N£WS. SrecvLhTJux in breadstoBs is tlie most nn principled of all means adopted for selfish purposes of profit. It is direct taxation upon all classes, irrespective of wealth or exceeding poverty, in order to. aggrandize tlie individual whose keen wits would tram ple upon evcryclaim of humanity. Most po pular outbreaks have been occasioned by this very cause, and the parties who have first and most justly suffered, have been those who have speculated in this sordid manner, and who have accumulated large stores of breadstofts, originally bonght at «. low figure and offered for sale in times of famine at famine prices. Bread has risen in price forty per cent, within tlie last few weeks, and yet it is impossible to discover any justifiable reason for it. The bakers o Brisbane are not to blame in this matter as the advance on flour daring the same pe riod bas averaged far more than 40 percent. The cause is directly and wholly traceable to the reckless and criminal agency of ...

The North Australian. SATURDAY APRIL 9, 1864. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian — 9 April 1864

®jjc UovtJ} Australian. SATURDAY APRIL 9. 1S64. The daily organ of the Ministry has been moved to make a deliverance in relation to the franchise and electoral rights. Its article, of yesterday, on these subjects, was characteristic in its egotism and distortion of truth — un- sound iu argument, and ignorant in statement. The dangers of speculating are proverbially great. Even weu of erudition and intelligence have com mitted themselves to the most absurd and erroneous views upon subjects by time there has been no opinion — no matter how absurd and extravagant ; no argument — uo matter how unfounded and illogical — that has not been firmly maintained aud upheld by men of talent and learning. But although, from time to time, false opinions have been sustained by the very highest abilities, Btill, the truth has seldom failed to keep its ground and carry conviction. It is this result which has induced society to be so tolerant of error, and so forgiving to its assertors. But a1.^-..^_1...

WARWICK. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian — 12 April 1864

WARWICK. M,__ , w „» mucri pteaBeJl to learn that we may expect abont the end of May next to have a newspaper published in Warwick. From what I can learn, it is to be called the Warwick Adtocate, and I hope it will not belie its title. From the hands it is to be in, no have reason to believe that we will have our interests protected and our rights advocated. It will be an agreeable variety after the HaiL now defunct. But I fear an advocate for Warwick is too late, after the manner we have been served by that gentleman whom we elected as our j representative ; for, since we called on him ' to resign, by a requisition signed by nine- i tenths of the Warwick electors, he has not j had the courage to reply. If he does not i deem himself guilty of a breach of liis pro mises made on the hustings, why not come ' forward before his constituents, and meet them like an independent man ? I chanced to hear of late that a miserable tool of the Herbert Government wan'cd to learn from me how our r...
