MELBOURNE. December 7. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 9 December 1870

MELBOURNE. (,oso ov owx oouarsuoxmsur.) December 7. TheAssemblX last night had a busy time otit, and the debate on the paymentof mem- t bers question was above the average. On the division the second reading was carried by two to, one; but it is very questionable I indeed if the principle will be amirmed in the 1 Council. Mr Vale and Mr Jones were un commonly severe on the Minlster.of Lands, who at lost was provoked to give them a very happy rejoinder, but had to apologise for his escapade. The inquiry into the cuae of Mr Bruce did not come on, but it is expected to do so to-night. It is a great pity that Mr Long. more should.have been entrusted with this business, as he uecessarily is viewed with most determined and unserapulous opponent. t Why was not one of the members represent Sng the rNorth-eastern portion of the colony called upon to redress this grievance ? It seems to me that this affair will not have the v effect desired, as the statements contained In it are not borne out...

BUSHRANGING ON THE YARRA TRACK. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 9 December 1870

BUSHRANGING ON THE YARRA TRACK. It is'nbw some time since Victoria was troubled with bushrangers, butwithin' the lst few days a couple of desperadoes have had the temerity to tr th.er reruna on the rosadas hilghwaymen fortunitely with but partial success, for one of them has fallen into the hands of the police. It will be remembered that about two months ago the house of Mr Symons, audit commissioner, Vancluse, was broken into, and several articles of plate and two double-barrelled guns carried off by the thieves. The detective police arrested four men for the robbery, but only two of them were tried, and though the evidence against them was very strong, they were acquitted by the jury. Frederick Smith and John Sullivan, two of the men known to be connected with the robbery, stayed In town for some days, closely watched by the detectives, who thought by keep. long tem in ight it would be discovered where the property was hidden. They, however, foiled the police, and in a day or two ...

VIOLET TOWN. December 7. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 9 December 1870

VIOLET TOWN. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)   December 7; At a public meeting of the electors of this town and neighbourhood, held, some two months since, by a resolution then adopted Mr Linard on their behalf was authorised to procure (as required by the Electoral Act) the police magistrate's signature to the usual form, showing that for the convenience of the electorate a polling place was necessary to be established at Violet Town. The electors very reasonably object that they should be compelled to travel a distance of seven miles, and to a place numerically smaller, in order to exercise their right of the franchise. There is no wish to deprive the Duck Ponds people of their polling booth, but a, polling place is required for Violet Town. Such being the case the people am not disposed to, accept Mr Will's reply to Mr Linard as a final one. That gentle- man states that the Duck Ponds, being more central for the Seven Creks Division, there is no necessity for the Viole...
