POLITICS may be likened to .a game in which it is the business of the "outs" to displace the "ins," and the business of the "ins" to see that they don't succeed in doing so. Possibly more opportunities occur in the political game than in any other of taking advantage over an op ponent-of playing the game un fairly,-and the most common offence is misrepresentation of " something said or done by the other side. At the Labor ban quet in Camperdown recently, Mr Chatham, M.L.A., made a serious charge against Mr D. S. THE SONG OF THE KETTLE. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 29 July 1914

THE SONG OF THE KETTLE. Sweet are the aongs by lovers sung As thoy the old, old story tell, And sweot the croon the bees among The clover blooms and asphodel. And glad' the notes the skylarks trill, At dawn upon tholr buoyant wings; But dearer, softer, better still, The low, sweet song the kettle singa. How strangely come to ua again The pleasant scenes of other days, The happy golden moments when We went our simple childish ways; When all life's journey went before And gaily beckoned us with smiles, Ere we had left our father's door To go the many weary miles. There by the broad, deep fireplace sit Tho aged ones with Bilvered hair; Across each face the flashes flit, And faded cheeks grow flushed and fair: And strangely mingle smile and tear As memory in fondness brings The old, old days, tho while they hear Tho low, sweet song tho kettle singa. Tho embers throw their ruddy gleam On childish figures blithe and free That watch the changing glow, and dream Of wondrous things that are ...

Political Libels. ONE outcome of the bitter fight' now being* waged iirthe Federal elections Is a heavy crop of libel j actions. Dry Spell in the North. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 29 July 1914

Dry Spell in the North. IN the Mallee and part of the Wimmera the rainfall since the beginning of the year has been less than 4 inches. The news papers there have been grouping their weather and agricultural news under the ominous head ing of "The Drought." Feed has almost disappeared, and hand-feeding is being resorted to. In the case of many of the crops the seed has not yet ger minated ; others have had to be re-sown. A good fall of rain is required to save the situation, and it is cheering to note that some useful showers have fallen within the last couple of days. The scarcity of fodder sent up the price of hay, and farmers on the Western Plains have reaped some benefit from the enhanced p ri ces. . A d rou gh t u p n orth would also enhance land values in this district. Still, only, a thoroughly selfish individual .would wish to see. his district profit at the expense of another, and the hope will be generally re-echoed that the promise of more rain to come will be rea lised, ...

The Happy Hour. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 29 July 1914

The Happy Hour. Mr. Bently (in the heat of passion): There's not a ^single hour in the day when our home is perfectly happy. Mrs. Bently: Oh, yes, there is, dear! Mr. Bently: I'd like to know when it comes in, then. Mrs. Bently: It always comes in just after you have gone out. Needless to say, the happy hour started at once. Don't ever be afraid to try it when there is work waiting to be done. To try and fail may make you look rather silly, perhaps, but it is far better even to look a little silly than to refuse to try. We are slow to believe that which, If believed, would hurt our feelings. Nine-tenths of the people who fail in life probably do so because they; have never learnt how to be really thorough. Cattle-raising Is the chief industry of Abyssinia.

MORAL REFLECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 29 July 1914

MORAL REFLECTIONS. In "order to raise me, it is necessary ! to be above them. j A ilttle word we cannot withdraw, is often life's greatest thorn. To gain a goo dreputation, endeavor to bo what you desire to appear. The way to avoid evil is not by maiming our passions, but by compel ling them to yield their vigor to our moral nature. We should make it our chief care neither to ridicule, nor to deplore, nor to execrate, but to understand the ac tions of mankind. A mistake made on one's own some times does more for one than a suc cess one owes to somebody else. Mnn's lives are as thoroughly blend ed with each other as the air they breathe; evil spreads as necessarily as disease. To sin against knowledge is a much greater crime than an ignorant tres pass; as the crime which is capable of no excuse is more heinous than the fault which admits of a tolerable plea. A man has no mbre right to hoard knowledge and experience than he has to hoard his gold. One can no more live to himself and gr...

There was an attendance of 130 resi dents at the meeting on Saturday night to discuss the question of obtaining a new recreation reserve, the old one having been taken as the .site for the railway station. No. 1 could be obtained free, but was a long distance from the town ; No. 2'w.as fairly suitable and. only part of the area required would need to be purchased ; and No. 3 was the most suitable as well as the most expensive site: A letter was read'-from Mr D.
