PLANE, SUPER-LOYALIST. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 22 June 1917

PLANE, SUPER-LOYALIST. l The brilliant fight waged by Chaplain Col. Plane against the powers of Fihelly ism, I.W.W.-ism, and every othe^ brand of 'ism' opposed to the National cause has led his admirers to form a commit tee for the purpose of raising a testi monial fund. Mr. Arthur Midson is the chairman, and there are many influential people, connected with the movement. The committee held a meeting on Tues day last, and arrangements were made to enlist the aid of Nationalists who were willing to canvass for subscriptions. The fund now stands at £200, but that is merely the nucleus of a big fund, which the chairman thinks should total at least £600. Now then, you returned soldiers, in whose interests the gallant 'padre' fought so hard, come along with - your half-crowns and help swell the fund. The hon. secretaries are Messrs. Shaw and Rees, of the National Political Coun cil. The Labor party certainly does not lack hide. Its Metropolitan District Council recently asked the City Co...

THE GRAND CANYON OF ARIZONA. IMPRESSIONS OP A QUEENSLANDER. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 29 June 1917

THE GRAND CANYON OF ARIZONA. I IMPRESSIONS OF A QUEENSLANDER. I 'We left El Portal at 8 a.m. There had 'been slight snow in the night, and the shrubs on the upper slopes were lightly covered with white, but the morning was fine, and we had a beautiful trip down. I sat outside oh the observation car. . . . T So. the train went on through the cultivated plain. We passed a large city — Tresno, celei brated for its raisins — and soon after came bedtime. Up at 6.30, and what a change! Sage-bush, desert, pale brown soil, not a blade of grass, but peppered . with grey sage-bush; yet where irrigated it grows lucerne and other crops luxuri antly. The plain got more and more arid, and then appeared small agaves and long, thorny, strangely-twisted cords of a sort of cactus. These are native. Then hilly, rocky desert like Castle Hill, Townsville, multiplied a, thousand limes. As I sat and watched the drought-stricken country, so different to lowering El Por- ' tal of yesterday morning, I saw a ...

Commonsense and Compulsion. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 29 June 1917

Commonsense and Com pulsion. (To the Editor.) Sir, — ;Mr. Hughes is going to give com pulsory service abroad, with its muddle headed label of conscription, one more chance of escaping what every man whose brain is not water-logged sees is inevitable. It is no use to talk of giving voluntary enlistment another trial. How many trials has it had? How many times has it failed? A Nationalist Go vernment is firmly demanded by the people, and a 'Nationalist Government during the present world-crisis without compulsory service abroad resembles the play of 'Hamlet' with the title-role omit' ted. Under the circumstances the neces sity for a referendum is the most com plete proof that we have not yet come ? . into our own in regard to Nationalism. ?. For, frankly, a referendum on such a sub ject was a hark back to Laborism. It was an effort to placate the socialistic clique at a time when a firm attitude should have been taken. Of course, the referendum policy is weakness — seen to be a weakne...

Federal Service Exams. THE "FLY IN THE OINTMENT." [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 29 June 1917

i Federal Service Exams. THE 'FLY IN THE OINTMENT.' Ip. our' last issue reference was made to the Federal Government's proposed amendment of the Public ^Service Act to enable returned soldiers up to the age of 51 years to take part in the examina tions in the clerical division of the ser-' vice. The paragraph pointed out that there was a 'fly in the ointment,' and that the so-called concessions would not. be of much benefit to returned men. In quiries have revealed the fact that the Act is so bound by restrictions that the number of returned soldiers who will be able to take advantage of it will be too insignificant to mention. For example, take the competitive exam, to be held in August next. The Commonwealth 'Gazette,' the official organ of the Federal Government, informs us 'The commencing annual salary will 'be: — Under 18 years of age, £60; at 18, 19, and 20, £72; at 21, £126, or £150 if the officer is married. Appointees may ad vance by nearly increments to £210. An officer ap...
