LANGWARRIN [Newspaper Article] — Mornington and Dromana Standard — 9 October 1909

LANCWARRIN On Thursday of last week a working bee took place to make an entrance from the public road to Mr McGraw's gate. The Cranbourne. council allowed the Association to have pipes for the purpose at cost price, which most people think should have been given free of charge, as the improvement being made was on the public road. MrP. P . Murray very kinily carted the pipes from Cranbourne freeof cost. Mrs McGraw and Mrs C. TV. Murray provided a splendid after noon tea for those who as-embled to do the-work. At last Monday night's meet ing of the "Progress" it was decided to have a small working bee to dress the tennis court, but there was such a gather ing of tennis players present, that, need less to say, not much work was. done. It was also decided at the same meeting that a second working bee be held on Wednes day of next week, on Boundary road, be tween "Ballam Park" and 'Mr Corlett's property, for the purpose of further cut= ting down the sandhill, and making, im provements t...

Bitter Pit. ITS CAUSE, AND HOW TO PREVENT IT. [Newspaper Article] — Mornington and Dromana Standard — 9 October 1909

Bitter Pit. ITS CAUSE, AND HOW TO PREVENT IT. [BY CO. C. G. COLE.] Cause.-I have no doubt whatever that Bitter Pit is due to an overflow I of sap, and if anyone feels desirous of dveloping this disease, an ideal method would be, to plant in a nice light sandy soil, work well, manure heavily, prune hard, and then irrigate, and with the varieties at all subject to I the Pit, these conditions will be found ' to develop it to perfection. With s r·ference to the stock having any in fluence in the causing of Bitter Pit, I C feel sure that it has none, thatever, but I am just as sure that hard culture, that is practically neglecting cultiva tion, pruning, and manuring will posi tively prevent Bitter Pit, but as you are well aware, will also prevent the grower getting a crop worth marketing. Irrigation I am convinced, will al- g the Pit is to be kept under. Sweating.-Another and in my opinion the greatest evil we have to contend with is the development of this disease by Sweating.
