NORTH DEVON. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 27 May 1914

NOUTIL DEVON. Under most favorable conditions Empire Day was celebrated at the Devon North S.S. on Friday last. The pupils had gone to no small troublo to decorate the school, and all were delighted with its appearance. The president of the school committee (Mr. j J. C. Gay) took the chair. Tho proceedings were opened with a song by tho children, after which Cr. Barlow addressed all pre sent. Ho said that his theme would be the Union Jack, the emblem of unity, peace and honesty. Ho romindod the boys that tho red of their flag stood for bravery, and that thoro was room for valour in their every day life—the doing of right, come what may. Ho pointed out the many advantages children nowadays have, and lie trusted these favors would make them doubly loyal to their country. Em pire Day was originally meant only for children, hut time has shown that adults are eager to join in showing their loyalty. Football. SCHOOLS FOOTBALL. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 27 May 1914

Football. SCHOOLS FOOTBALL. The iirst of the competition matches between the scliools took pi ice on Sat urday, when Yarrun played West Al berton at Yarraui, and £sorth Devon played Wonwron at Devon. At Yarram an interesting game was seen, and much amusement was given to the few spectators. The match was played in a splendid spirit, and keen in terest was maintained throughout. The Iirst quarter was a very good one, and was remarkable for tho manner in which the young players kept their places. It was pretty to watch the rucks moving up tho ground. Uy tho way, it would bo better if tho boys played on a smaller ground, as tho distance is rather too great for such young players. Tha teams con sisted of 13 boys on each sido, and, in tho absence of Mr Forbes, Mr Les. Wallace ; acted as umpire. Jhe Yarram team (red and blue) was made up of D. Hill (capt.), S. McLachlan, A. Wood, K. Wood, F. Brand, P. McAinch, J. Honlev, F. Grano, S. Wellwood, A. Miller, A. Mitchell, F. McGauran, and G. C...
