THE SPALPEEN [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 15 January 1870

. .1 ? „ Tmjayx#sw~^~~~ - f Sg P. McTetytu,Ht$$'r : JL thousand ideas 'bad crowded on the -'? poor spalpeen's mind as be lay to a protracted . igony of fear and suspense. Once or twice he bad felt himself on the point of starting op and giving the alarm ; but there was none to help him, and -bis life would sorely be sacrificed— -and then, thought be, what would Nelly and the children do ? So he ?at, or rather continued to lie still (as well, perhaps, he might), till the door shut, and then warily and gently stole from his ambush ; not, however, til! he bad returned thanks to God for his escape, and again in his heart gratefully thought of the honest fsrmeraod his counsels. True, bis conscience smote him, as it often did afterwards, that be could hit upon no stratagem nor think of any means to avert bo foul a murder; but he used to say, 'That fellow Denis was such a fierce giant of a fellow, that I dam oot face him with his cocked pistols!'' THE REVENUE FOR 1869. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 15 January 1870

THEBEVTENUE FOE 1869. Wb have reason to believe that the Revenue returns for the year 1869 will exhibit the most gratifying results. The amount of revenue actually received was £8,177,970, being £25,000 more than the Estimate of the Colonial Treasurer in bis statement last October. To this sum of £2,177,970 is to be added the sum of £30,000, due from the Government of Victoria, on account of Border Customs. This will make up the stun of £2,207,970, as the revenue of the year, 1869 ; being an increase of £162,614 on the revenue of the rear, 1868, which was £S,O4S,S56. These figures may, we believe, H» relied apqu as wrwet,— Tnvsn *nd Country Journal.

THE FLYING SQUADRON. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 15 January 1870

THE FL5TING SQUADRON. Is the S. II. Herald of the 5th instant we notice Ihe appended letter, signed 'Justice,' relative to the conduct ot one of the officers of the Kmlymion. Certainly such an oversight by the gentleman named may have been through accident, but it may be imagined that the city folks had had quite enough of these gentry to trust them, particularly with money collected for a public charity. Of a truth the Galatea and the Flying Squadron are earning a most un edviablc notoriety in these colonies— the former by robbing the poor washerwomen and others of New Zealand ; ind ?the latter, perhaps by accident, by forgetting to forward to jts destination through the proper channel money sub scribed by the citizens in aid of a charitable institution. We hope ' Justice ' has not spoken in vain : c 'Tiie visit of the 'Flying .Sguadron ? must Be fresh in the memory of your readers, as well as the 'boneflt' that was tendered to the School of Industry by several of the officers belo...

QUEANBEYAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 15 January 1870

QUEANBEYAN. On Thursday week a banquet was given by the electors of Queanbeyan to the Hon. D. Egan and Mr. ThomasOarrett. The chair was occupied by Dr. Morton, vice-chair by Mr. W. G. N'Neill. Mr. Eagan, through illness, was unable to attend. The toast of the evening was proposed by the chairman and responded to at some length by Mr. Garrett. Mr. B. Sindel proposed the ' Electors of Manaro,' to which Mr. Garrett Cotter, of Mioalago, responded. The Press, Ladies, Chairman, and other wast* followed, which were duly honored. After a very pleasant evening the company broke up about 10 o'clock. [During Mr. Garrett's speech he intimated that he hoped soon to accompany Mr. Robertson on a tour through Argyle, Queanbeyan, and Manaro. Mr. Garrett in proposing the health ef the Vice-Chairman, made an assertion which we challenge. He said Mr. Egan ' had been returned by the votes of the Micalago men.' Whilst admitting that Mr. Epan received great support atColinton we maintain that the Ooomaand...

KIANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 15 January 1870

K1A.NDRA. fFROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.! Well, the battle, after a close and spirited contest, has been won by tbe red. let us hope that there will be no angry feelings.lcft behind. 1 can safely say in Kiandra such is tho case. I never heard a single angry word passed between the contending parties. It was generally supposed that Mr. Egan would have a very large majority throughout the district, the result has proved that another but a ' Minister for the Crown ' would have been defeated. Mr. Grahame ought not to feel much chagrined at the result. This day is the polling for Gold Fields South. Stephen will get a majority here. There is no local news worth relating. The cuuntry looks beautiful, the grass knee high. Kiandra, Monday, January 10.
