'ALL IS VANITY' And the preacher is right, althongh he did'nt refer to Bicycles. There . . ' is, however, a vanity which everyone has in life — a proper desire to out shine his fellows—to have the BEST TO BE GOT. In bicycles this is just as easy as possible. Few will dispute the fact that to-day, as in years past, it keeps up the enviable reputation of being the Best Bicycle in the World. BHfflITT AID WOOD, Ltd., 397 George-street, Sole Agents.

FRIDAY, MAY 6th, 1898. JEWS IN WARFARE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

FRIDAY, MAY 6th, 1898. ? -+-. ? JEWS IN WARFARE. News reaches us that 50,000 Jews have r volunteered for service in the United States ? ;Army. The Jew has always been to the fore in the caus8 of freedom, and may feel a specially deep and pressing obligation to resist the inachinations and evils of a nation that has given him so much cause for bitterness, and the cruelties practised have kindled a revenging spirit The least of whom could wield, These elements, and arm him with the force Of all their regions. Borne will be pleased to see the valor displayed by the Jews in enlisting for service, and be ? gratified in thinking that the warlike traits and the fighting qualities of the Jew has not been lost in the business- cares, social enjoyments and acts of peace encouraged so many years under the flag of the Stars and Stripes. There is not a doubt that even when the dark clouds of slavery and oppression are being lowered upon, and the cry of freedom is shrieked from thousands of human...

Proposal to Supply Sick-room Appliances. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

Proposal to Supply Sick-room Appliances. A well attended meeting (convened by the Mayoress of Sydney) was held at the Town Hall yesterday. Mrs. Neville Cohen (acting hon. secretary to the movement) gave a brief statement of the object that such a meeting had in view In every British centre of population, she said, there was an organisation of a a character similiar to that sought to be established here. The scope of the work would be to provide some of those mechanical appliances that were con sidered necessary either to mitigate suffering or to hasten recovery from severe illness, such as a bed rest, a wheeled chair, and a mechanical support for a disabled limb. These were under ordinary circumstances beyond the reach of the invalid poor. Mrs. Cohen said that they had the assurance of a leading medical man that a society of the kind suggested was very necessary, as there were many who would by its means be able to do without hospital assistance. It was an important form of charitab...

Our Charities. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

Our Charities. At a recent communal gathering several gentlemen drew attention to the overlapping possible by the number of societies wishing to work in the cause of philanthropy. To date the instances of ' overlapping ' have not been particularly noticeable, but the ladies have made a serious error in mistaking the aims and objects of a Chevra Kadisha. At the last meeting of the Ladies' Chevra Kadisha it was reported that the President had arranged for a person to be brought down to Sydney from the Liverpool Asylum and conveyed to the Hospice. The ladies voted a sum towards the mainten ance of the person whilst in the Institution, and anticipated the same would be done by the main branch of the Chevra Kadisha. No doubt the case was one for special attention, otherwise the worthy President of the Ladies' Chevra Kadisha would not have taken these steps an the matter, but we fail to find it the duty of the Chevra Kadisha to acfc at all in such matters. As the Society is j ust entering...

JOHN ISRAEL MONTEFIORE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

JOHN ISRAEL MONTEFIORE. There has just passed away at Southsea, at the ex treme old age of 90, John Israel Montefiore, who well may be designated as an old identity of New Zealand, as he was a conspicuous figure in Auckland at its foundation. He left the Mother Country originally in 1829, arriving at Sydney after a seven and a-half months' voyage, two of which were spent at way ports — an ordinary passage at that time. In 1831 he landed at Tauranga, where he sojourned wth the natives for four years, trading with Sydney. He then spent one and a-half years at Kororareka (Bay of Islands), leaving there in 1835, He returned there again in 1840, and came to Auckland to be present at the first sale of town lots. He invested largely at that sale for speculating Sydney clients. He was one of Auckland's first mer chants, his place of business being where the Bank of New Zealand now stands. In those days a tidal creek ran in front of his premises, and on this allotment grew a fine pohutukawa ...

Jews in the Bombay Riots. MR. J. SASSOON ATTACKED. Bombay March 11. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 6 May 1898

Jews in the Bombay Riots. ME. J. SASSOON ATIAOKED. Bombay March 11. ; Serious riots writes a correspondent of the ' Jewish World' broke out at Madanpura, near Jacob Circle, in Bombay, among the ' natives, begun by ' Jalains, ' or the Moham medan weavers, on the morning of Wednesday the 9th instant. The immediate cause of the riots was that a doctor, while on his duty of house-to-house visitation, wanted to examine a Jalai lady, about twenty, who was suffering from the plague. The Jalains flatlv refused to permit the doctor to examine her. They would not even allow a lady doctor to examine the patient. From this it seems that they had ; pre-meditated a riot, and the above-mentioned case gave an opportunity for the breaking out \ of their long smouldering fury against the plague l officials. ? About noon the riots spread throughout the ' native town. The rioters had their watchword, ' Gorako maro ' ( kill the Europeans), and in I many cases they literally acted upon it. In I other cas...
