The King and Ireland. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 15 May 1903

1'Iic Kiiig and Ireland. 4 iN-tlie hours of tlieir bitterest dis content, says an Australian in London, in the past ihe majority of the Irish people have felt, and often freely ac knowledged, that the King wns never in auy personal sense responsible for the j^uglish administrative blunders from which thev have suffered, and ?which seem at last to have come to an ? end. The sympathetic interest that he took in the efforts made by Mr. Gladstone to establish Home Rule : .made a deep impression in Ireland, and on this account ready credence is now given there to a report that some of -the best clauses in the new Land Purchase Bill are mainly the outcome of suggestions offered by him to Mr. Wyndham aud other . meaibers of the Cabinet. . It may, therefore, he ex ?pected .that when tlie King and Queen .visit' Ireland in the coming summer | ? thev, will receive, as the leading Dub Jin^fewapaper promises them, 'a wel ,Come as sincere and as enthusiastic as -Irish hearts and Irish voices can m...

Contra! or Noxious Trades. Thk Board of Health has experi enced considerable difficulty in inducing municipal councils to maintain a strict supervision of the noxious trades with in their boundaries. -' It has been found that- this want of supervision is follow ed by laxity oil tho part of owners of noxious trades in carrying on their operations. An intimation is also conveyed in the circular that if any neglect is shown in this regard the Board will take tlie necessary legal proceedings against offending manu facturers, and will afterwards take action against the municipal authori ties to recover (lie legal costs t...

BSottaca'.asid S^iughtei*. I It is remarkable how greatly oar estimate :-:?:-? of iiuraolvcs and our qualities differs from the estimate formed of us by others. If the tiling were practical. lo, many folks would realise heavily by selling themselves at their own valuation (if they could find 'cus tomers), -'and afterwards, baying themselves back on the basis of other people's notion of - thiiir.wprth..- The more -iiinmerous and the harder the blows aimed at our self-conceit ?in the days. of our youth, the better for us. They pulverise, as it were, the vvorser part of our 'nature, and nothing survives the process but what deserves to endure.
