The North Coast Separation Movement. [Newspaper Article] — The Voice of the North — 20 November 1919

The North Coast Separa tion Movement. It cannot be denied that the residents of the North Coast and Northern Table land of this State have ample reason to bo intensely dissatisfied with the treat ment they have received for many years past from the governments which have ruled in New South Wales. That they have not tamely submitted to the ne glect and indifference with which their claims for practical and effectual at tention have been contemptuously dis regarded by successive 'Ministries i9 well known, and it must be confesse4 that so far they have conducted their campaign for the removal of the numerous serious grievances they labour under with commendable energy and re solution, and at the same time with dis cretion and commonsense. Naturally, as the results of their efforts have !been so poor in comparison with the exertions put forth, their disappointment is keen and their indignation great, and they now find themselves somewhat, at a loss as to the best course to take in order...

TAR AND ITS BY-PRODUCTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Voice of the North — 20 November 1919

On the retorting of coal, which, at the temperature of 11.50 C, separates into its component parte ofi gas and residues a black oily material, separates, out in the scrubbers, or coolers, from the gas. This is known as tar. From this material, which averages 7 gallons per ton of eoal used, no less than 475 commercial articles can be now manufactured with this material as a base. The tar itself, as is well known, i's used for asphalting and general road engineering work. Up till recently the' tar was used in its crude state, but' owing to the presence of water and light oils, which interfere . with its f setting qualities, this was often found unsatisfactory, and, although dehydra tion of tar has been carried out in Eng land for upwards of twenty (20) years,! so far as Australia is concerned, it is quite a recent innovation. The centre of the tar distillation industry has been, up to the present, confined to New South "Wales; one of the pioneers in j£bis, line of business being that o...

Australian Navy Boys. [Newspaper Article] — The Voice of the North — 20 November 1919

Australian Navy Boys. The failure of the Federal Govern ment to mitigate the sentences passed upon the five youths for misbehaviour at ITremantle, on the occasion of the visit of the "Australia" to that port several months ago, is occasioning much murmuring throughout the Common wealth. Men who profess to be in touch with the affairs of the Universe evidently fail to comprehend the seri ousness of a situation at their own doors.

Walsh island Ships. [Newspaper Article] — The Voice of the North — 20 November 1919

Walsh island Ships. The daily press insists on alluding to the "Delungra" as being the first merchant vessel "built in this country. As a matter of fact,: they ref,use to publish corrections on the point. It is regrettable that such reports should go forth since they are liable to :be accepted as historically correct, whilst the reverse is the fact. .For more than a century Australia, has been building merchant ships of various sizes, both wood and iron.
