LIFE. I .life! I know not wliat thou art, But know that thou and I must part, And when, or how; or whore we met I own to me's a secret yet. Life! wo'vo been long together, Through pleasant and through cloudy weather; 'Tis hard to part when friends are dear— Perhaps 'twill cost a sigh, a tear; Then steal away, give little warning, Choose thine own time; Say not good-niglit, but in some brighter clime Bid me good-morning. To free the hands from disagreeable odors such as that of onions, cod-liver oil, etc., mix a little ground dry mus tard with warm water and wash the hands well with it. REDUCED CIRCUMSTANCES. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 22 July 1914

REDUCED CIRCUMSTANCES. It is a pathetic tiling to see people struggling with reduced circumstances —that is, a reduction of income, and an inability to live as they have been in the habit of living. But much heart-break would' be spared if when" such' adverse fate comes people would only at once settle down and accept the new and smaller income, and live on what it will easily give them;''rather than to try to "keep up appearances." Every day we see people trying to live in a large house with one cheap maid-of-all-work, where they had kept, and kept busy, three competent servants, or even more— trying to keep up with the society that they can no longer afford.to move in, by scrimping and toiling every where, and having no happiness and 110 peace and comfort; giving an occa: sional dinner or lunch, and going with out necessaries to pay-for them; mak ing over old gowns indefinitely in or der to accept invitations, and carrying hearts that ache harder and harder all the time. If only t...

CHAPTER XI. The Serpent Shows Its Tooth. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 22 July 1914

CHAPTER XI. The Serpent Shows Its Tooth. The winter months liad passed, ana now blustering March with its storms was ttpon them. "The fishermen of Port Craigie were beginning to buzz around their boats again. ■ Eric was in London, and from many sources these humble foilcs at home had assurances that he was yet destined to dazzle the world by his gift of song. Angus Galbraith, the fisherman, turned' wearily to his life of toil again, carrying in his si lent heart that load that would never lift. As for Elsie, when he saw her face be had his reward. She had got back her old, bright, laughing nature, and if ever a thought entered her mind- of the days when she had seen into the inner depths of a strong man's soul, it was only as a tender memory that soothed rather than dis turbed her. For the first three months after the .departure- of Eric she had gone about the house singing softly to herself. Her only recreation was the piano— a gift from Angus. With industry that was indefatigable ...

CHAPTER X. Looming Clouds. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 22 July 1914

CHAPTER X. Looming Clouds. A -week li:id passed, and once more it was a Saturday night. During all these days ^nSus Galbraith-had never been in l'ort Craigie. He had sent a short note to his mother saying that he intended to fish from Paithlie all the week, but.tjiat he might he home on the Saturday, and to Eric, at least, the message was welcome. The little toy harbor was crowded with boats, and from the tall masts the herrinc nets hung in streamers. In the midst of the steam from the tanning tanks fishermen with long poles were. lifting their nets, and were toil"'1" up the long, tortuous road from (lie harbor to the links on the top of tiie cliff. Some of the earliest arrivals had got the length of oiling and polishing their hoots, and the more blithesome were (lading with the girls at the end of the jetty. But gradually, as the night fell, the men went home, tired with their week's work, and the har bor became almost deserted. Annus Galbraith sat 011 a spar, painting bis. buoys. ...

Hotel Prosecution. At South Melbourne court oil 17 th Juno, before Mr. Road Murphy, P.M., Joseph Murphy (Albion Hotel, South Melbourne) pleaded guilty to the elwrse of applying a false trade de scription, on 12th March, to schnapps, which was labelled Wolfe's Schiedam Schnapps. The evidence disclosed that Matthew Campbell Leckie, an ex cise officer, visited defendant's hotel 011 the date • stated, and took posses sion of a bottle of schnapps. It was shown, on analysis, that the spirit was not what it purported to be, the bottle having been filled with bulk spirits. For defendant, it was said that, while recognising that the offence, if wilful, constituted a very serious offence 011 Hie public and merchants concerned, in his case it was through the care lessness of a maid during his absence. A fine of £1, with 21/- costs, was re corded. When cleaning a stove that has been splashed with fat from the frying pan, the best plan is to take a piece of rag and dip it into the soft soot at t...
