Wentworth Irrigation Area. LAST SEASON'S FRUIT CROP. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

Wentworth Irrigation Area. LAST SEASON'S FRUIT CROP. The Manager has reported that the fruit crop was a good one, and that owing to the shortage of stone fruit in the Vic torian fruit districts generally, the bulk of the apricot, peach, and nectarine crops was sent to Melbourne in a fresh state, the shipments amounting in all to some 2000 cases. Dairying and Irrigation. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

Dairying and Irrigation. BY G. H. TOLLEY. i [During the recent annual meetings of the Co-operative Butter Factory Mana gers and Secretaries' Association of New South Wales, Mr. G. H. Tolley, irriga tion engineer to the Commission, read a paper in response to a request preferred to the department for information on the sitbove subject. The paper is intended for the man on the land who has to provide his own water supply, and it will no doubt be found of most interest to those readers of the " Record" who are not settlers on the State's big irrigation project. It is, how ever, far from being devoid of interest to those whose water supply is provided by the State.-Ed.,] ; In pursuance of my duties as irrigation engineer, I find amongst the farmers and graziers I visit that there are many mis conceptions, and many mistakes are made, ^nd generally the outcome is a condemna tion of irrigation. A popular fallacy seems to exist that| the whole art of irrigation is to bring water to a certai...

Soil Improvement. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

Soil Improvement. BY H. J. BRAUND. . There is no soil which has come under my " notice on the Murrumbidgee Irriga tion Areas which would not be material ly improved in texture and fertility by either subsoiling, liming, or the plough . ing under of green manuring crops. Our best soils at Mirrool are all deficient in organic matter, as is naturally to be expected in an airid climate where the heat is great and the oxidising power of the sun's rays is exceedingly efficient. We have many thousands of acres of soil on the Areas which are nearly ideal from an irrigationist's standpoint, but it must be also stated that there is a considerable airea which in its present physical condi tion cannot be truthfully called fit for intensive irrigation at all; It is with the object of assisting those men who have selected the latter class of farms, and to bring the. soils referred to within reach of economic irrigation that these notes are principally written. As I have pointed out in previous no...

POTATO GROWING. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

POTATO GROWING. Too much information on the subject of potato growing cannot be obtained at the present stage of the production of this crop on the Irrigation Areas. Idaho, for example, may be able to teach us some thing:. Conditions should be very simi lar there to what they are on the Mur rumbidgee Scheme, seeing that the State of Idaho is in the semi-arid region of the United States. One successful grower (Mr. C. F. Wright) in writing of his experiences there, recently stated: "In the spring I thoroughly disc and harrow the land, which holds the moisture and brings up the potatoes without irrigation. I then plant my rows from 3 feet to 3 feet 6 inches apart and about 14 inches in the row. If the ground is sloping or steep so the water runs through rapidly, plant 4 feet apart; if level or flat and the water runs slowly, plant 3 feet 6 inches apart. After planting 1 then cultivate at once before the potatoes sprout, and then let them grow until they are about 6 inches tall. If the ...

Type Pig Styes. (Concluded from previous issues.) [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

Type Pig Styes. BY H. R. ALEXANDER. (Concluded from previous issues.) Plan No. 4 gives details of a portable pig house to be used as a shelter shed for pigs when grazing out in paddocks. Various styles of pig shelter sheds could be built on the same principle. A recent issue of an American paper gives several ideas regarding this style of pig conveni ence, but the shed illustrated appears to be the best. The side walls open and hang up as shown in the sketch, and act as a veran dah. Should the weather be cold, one of the sides can be let down. With the sides opening, the portable shed can be made suitable either for hot summer or cold winter weather. The shed should been fitted with slide runners, and the slide runners should have ringbolts fixed to permit of the structure being easily moved from paddock to paddock with the aid of a horse. A couple of portable sheds would be of great help to many pigj raisers, particularly during extremely hot or cold weather. It will be noted that ...

DO YOU KNOW? [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

DO YOU KNOW? i Do you know exactly where, you have planted each variety of tree in your yourig orchard, or, even if you know now, will you know in a few months- time when the weather has washed out the pencil marks on the little pieces of deal you may have stuck in alongside the trees? It is very useful to have a permanent record on the ground of the whereabouts of each variety, and if not already done, the marking of the positions of the trees should not be longer delayed. There are many ways of permanently indicating the different varieties, but, if pushed for time, a dab of white paint or white lead on the deal board before using the lead pencil will make a much more permanent job.

RICE CULTIVATION. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

RICE CULTIVATION. In reply to a recent inquiry, a letter has been received from the Department of Agriculture, Victoria, stating that ow ing to the failure of the water for irriga tion during the past season, the rice ex periments being conducted by Mr. J. Takasuka, at Tyntynder, Swan Hill, and recently referred to in these columns, were not a success. The Agricultural Superin tendent, Mr. A. E. V. Richardson, states, however, that a Mr. Montague Cburchill Shann, of Tongala, is taking up rice cul 1ure and importing special machinery for the purpose. He has great faith in the possibilities of the industry, and the de partment hope to have some proof of its suitability during the coming year. Our own Department of Agriculture is mak ing an effort at the present time to obtain a supply of acclimatised rice seed which, if obtained, will be tested at the Yanco Experiment Farm. . ; >

HAT IRRIGATION AREA. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 September 1915

HAY IRRIGATION AREA. A report has recently been received from the Manager of the Hay Irrigation Area regarding the experimental grass plots planted on that settlement last spring by the Department of Agriculture in order, to demonstrate to settlers the value of the different classes of fodder crops. The fol- lowing varieties of grasses were included in the experiment, which was supervised by Inspector McDiarmid:- Rhodes grass, Tall Fescue, Phalaris, Bromus, Inermis, Texas Blue, Soudan grass, Chilian clover, Strawberry clover, Panicum Bulbosum, Panicum Flavidum. The result of these experimental plots is reported by the Manager as follows: "Although the Rhodes grass came up very thinly it soon covered the whole of the plot, and from results to date proves itself to be well suited to this Area, and no doubt several of the settlers will sow a quantity of this grass in the coming autumn. "Tall Fescue and Phalaris, also Bromus Inermis) have all done as well as could be expected on the poo...
