MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 2 August 1866

MISCELLANEOUS. A fatal mining accident is l-hronicled by the "Bendigo Advertiser" :-A man named Alexander Cameron, while engaged knocking down stuff in Watson's claim, on the Hust ler's reef, on Friday, met with an accident which proved fatal. A quantity of stuff fell on him and broke his pelvis. He was taken to the hospital but died half an hour after his admission. Under the head of "Training for the Navy" the " Bendigo Independent says :-Our Bo rough Council have sanctioned the applica. tion of the keeper of the reserve to sail boats on the two waterholes in the Camp reserve, dignified with the name of reservoirs, and to lay a charge on those whomay be so venture some as to trust their persons so far from land on a body of water of such large dimensions that a push with the hand would send the craft from one side to the other; and, to gratify the boating propensities of a council lor, the mayor said that the privilege.granted would not prevent any citizen keeping. and. using his ...

A RELIC OF THE PAST. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 2 August 1866

A RELIC OF THE PAST._ Amongst other papers, belonging to the late Andrew. M'Noughton, there is a stray number of the " Port Philip Patriot Mel bourne Advertiser"', . VoL 1, No..45, date August, 1, . 1839. It is torn, dog-leaved, blotted with ink, and of that delicious yellow hue that collectors of MS and pamphlets love to contemplate. There.is a fair sprinkling of advertisements.. Amongst them is the schooner Agnes, 74 tons, advertised to sail to Hobart Town, to Melbourne and Geelong; and the Shamrock,. smack, to Melbourne, J. P. Fawkner as agent. in Melbourne, and William Gray. as agent Geelong. King David, Fisher advertised four - thousand highly bred ewes, and ten thousand wethers, with a right. of station, and again. a large flock of sheep, rams, &c,, at Darkey Creek, about eight miles from Geelong, with rights of station, &c. A Mr Meek advertises £600 to be let on mortgage at 15 per cent. per annum, interest to be paid half-yearly. J. P. Fa-vwkner, at this time ...

RACE TO COME. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 2 August 1866

RACE TO COME. [FRO3I oUR 3i~ D REPOnTER.] The Kilmore annual meeting will take place on a day nt ither before or after the 9th August. The following are the nominations for the event : The Kilmore Annual Town Plate, open to all horses, valued at a certain sum within the Borough, gentlemen riders, catch.weights, entrance 5 sors. Yardstick Boniface Chaffeutter St..Crispin. Stonewall Grains . The anticipation of this event has caused a little excitement and speculation, although not so much as we have seen manifested on some former occasions of' this meeting. With regard to the qualifications of the competitors not much can be said, but as they are all pretty well equal, some good running may be expected. Ytrdsticik and Boniface are old and tried horses, and have both been winners of this plate .at previous meetings, yet, for some reason or other they do not appear in very- good fettle with some of their original backers. But as they are pretty well ac quainted with the course, andufro...

DANDIES ON CHANGE. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 2 August 1866

DANDIES ON CHANGE. (From the Saturday Review.) -o The city may:b said to have quietly- es tbilshed itself in the very heart of Belgra. via. Like Fenianism, it has- agents where one least suspects. They. are as difficult to make out as policeman in plain clothes. There are certain familiar forms that haunt the ballrooms of the " best se:" whose means of living, as they say of tramps, are not very "ostensible." By day they arc ore thing; by candlelight another. Society only knows them by the exquisite finish of their attire, the coolness and ease of their manner, their perennial flow of small talk, the sumptuous ness of their Greenwhich.dinners, the taste fullness of their appointments in the park. It sees then in the vanguard of the annual campaign of pleasure, glittering in the thick est of the intoxicating fray.. But their splendour, like Cinderella's, vanishes. with the dawn. Each morning the grosser. con. ditions which clog this brilliant existence re assert the?selves. The dandy...
