THE ^jObeittser. PUBLISHED DAILY. MONDAY, MARCH 30, 1857. SHALL TRANSPORTATION TO THE COLONIES BE KESUMED ! Society in the old country seems to be onH'ie verge of dissolution. The pre valence o! crime from the worst to the most petty class of offences, appears to lie truly frightful. The latst ad vices from England brought by tho last steamer, teem with complaints o! outrages of the grossest character against life and property, with narra tives of the most artful swindling transactions on record, and with dnih occurring instances of theft and rob- I bery of the most daring character. A file of English journals cannot be taken up, without encountering at least hnli n dozen cases of such offences against thp law. Garrotting has usurped the .plage which " Burking " occupied some thirty years ago, and no respectable tnember of society stirs abroad after dark .without feeling that his safety it endangered by the numbers of the ruffians who infest the large towns of Great Britain.
