Weekly News-Letter FROM AN APPPRENTICE TO HIS MOTHER Light Discussions on Topics of the Week [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 19 November 1930

Weekly News-Letter FROM AN APPPRENT ICE TO HIS MOTHER Light Discussions on Topics of the Week Dear Mum, 1 liings are . coming down, aeroplanes and .cars particularly.' Cars arc getting within the reach of more people who cannot afford to pay for them, and I'm noticing this every day. The basic wage will be coining down too, after the hearing of the basic wage investiga tion, though the unions are objecting to an investigation being made into the matter. TACKS AND NAILS Elimination of Waste [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 19 November 1930

TACKS AND NAILS Elimination of Waste /As a starting point for a very convincing illustration as to how waste may be eliminated, a report recently issued by the U.S.A. Bureau of Standards on the subject of Cut Tacks, and small Cut Nails is very much to the point. We learn that in the early days of the indus try, size was indicated by the weight in ounces of 1000 tacks, as for example, a Sin. tack went 1000 to 10 ounces, whilst a -gin. tack went 1000 to only 3 ounces, and for this reason they were referred to as 10 per cent, and 3 per cent, tacks respectively. After a lot of discussion a confetence has decided that in place of 21,200 variations in style, size, packing and finish, this should be simplified to only 1156 stock items, and that tacks in future, be sold by weight only and not by count. By this means, as the manufacturer has less capital tied up in slow moving stock, he can sell cheaper. The retailer will have a quicker turnover. The consumer will get better mate rial at a l...
