NEW YEAR'S DAY, YEA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 6 January 1871

NEW YEAR'S DAY, YEA.   One of tbe most successful picnics witnessed for years past, was held near Mr   Miller's pre-emptive section, Muddy Creek, about six miles from Yea, on Monday last. About 250 persons of all ages and sexes as-   sembled at an early hour in the day, and the spot chosen for the entertainment was soon covered with- vehicles of every description, laden with the good things of the surrounding   country and many of the delicacies   of the season culled from many a clime.   Prominent amongst the objects of interest   there displayed, was a curious structure strongly resembling a large meat safe, and the general impression conveyed by the presence of this mysterious article, which was     supposed to contain an unlimited supply of fowl. ham, sucking pig, and other sweatmeats, was of a pleasurable description.   Presently, however, the mystic ...

ANOTHER TRIP TO MELBOURNE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 6 January 1871

ANOTHER TRIP TO MELBOURNE   -o MR EDITOR -I have read two trips to Melbourne in your paper within the last two years, and after scratching my head and drawing my finger through my hair and perspiring considerably at the very thought of the undertaking. I said to myself here goes for trip number three, and to prevent confusion I shall just begin at the beginning. I took my place in the coach on the - day of -------- and started from the   Corner Hotel. I secured the box seat alongside of Christie, and here let me record that Christie is the most civil, careful driver that I ever sat alongside of. Those who have travelled along with him between   Yea and Alexandra, can form no conception of the brilliant manner he handles the   reins and whip along the Yarra track. Ir the samen coach we had three hank olffiial', 7,000 Olncts of- gold, and two troope'?*. )Whist evondor then that the axle of the cnach broke before we got it-mile from A...

CRICKET MATCH. MANSFIELD v. ALEXANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 13 January 1871

MANSFIELD v. ALEXANDRIA. -4--- (By "One of Them.") After the usual amount of waiting for one and running after another, we (the Alex andra men) got fairly started about noon en route to Mansfield, under the careful charge of our jolly ex-President, Mr M. Raphael, who kept us in the best of spirits till we arrived at Mr H. Yewers, Royal Hotel. By-the-bye, I must not forget to mention that we were met near Maindample and accompanied the rermainder of our jour ney by the President, crickcters, and a num ber of Mansfield gentlemen. After washing off and washing down the dust, and strength ening the inner man, we were ordered all to church. Monday morning commenced with a blazing sun, but before the wickets were pitched.--10.30-nature's curtains formed a canopy that enabled us to doll our harts, and th goentle hrcerzes blew, making the re mainder of the day all that could be do, aired. Our capt.in, Mr I?. Anderrson, hay. ing, with his usual good luck, won the toss, sent the Mansfield tea...
