The First GnP of 1800./ The glorious result -of the recent municipal election in the city of Lancaster is an achievement of no small magnitude, and though but a local election,' it is an iridex pointing with an unmistakeable and immovable finger to the triumphant success of the Democratic party in the great battle that is to be fought in November for the sovereignty ofthe States, the. Union as it is; and the Constitution as it was framed. . Local elections generally, depend.much upon the character pf the candidates for their result, as<really^ no political principle is involved in them. Such was not the case,'hbwever, in the Lancaster election. It was purely of a partisan character; so fought, with the most bitter onslaught on the part of the' vanquished, and so won. by the gallant Democracy. Not an unimportant /feature of this signal electiori is, the fact that/the Republicans arid their aiders and abettors have fqr some time secretly hugged this occasion as an opportun...

'-.. ' '.,"¦ --. For-tlie Democrat', ".'...-' '. SMETHPORT LYCE1JM. / . It is to be hoped and desired that the Young Men of the; Borough and. vicinity, will book themselves up well on the next Resolution to be debated before the Lyceum; "Jtesolved, that a.protective tariff is necessary to this country at the present' time." Such schools unquestionably pave-the way for the young men to sow the seed that will not only be productive of irhmedipt'e profit, but may lead, them to everlasting! renown. . It is said that Horace Binney remained'in his office for a long time"(it is almost incredible, but I think two years) before he.received any employment as a lawyer—not one single case." But during that.time, he employed himself in addressing Courts, and jurys of his own creating; and. thus when he made his debut, the court, jury, and by-stahders were astounded, and frorn that day till this, the world has well.-known and does well know what the name'of Horace Binnney means.. .
