- A Serttp of Hiutory. "WJhon tho Democratic Party was injjowor." We are continually and hugely amused with the boasting of certain Copperhead organs as to what the democratic party did when It was ih power. The people are told that the ' radicals iare Uestroyin^he i Government, depreciating tlHrvalue of pTopeTty.andeerionsly damaging all its resources of wealth. Thisejaculate the copperhead organs, was not the case when the Democratic party was in power. But those who recklessly charge corruption on the radicals, and claim purity for the Democracy, are as barren of facts to provi their charges as they ' ' are to establish their claims. ( It ia a historical fact, thfft while thai party was inpower, in every department or tho Government\the scheme of secession waa concocted by the leading Democrats of the South, who controlled the Government and' managed the Democratic party of th ^ e country. CAMPAIGN ETHICS The Tribune's comment upon the address of the Republican State Committee has excited various remark. The Sharswood papers cite it as a.testimony to the ' unexceptionable character of theirWididate ; the Republican papers complain of it as an unwarrantable interference with Pennsylvania politics. We regard it as neither proving th,e unexceptionable character of ,Tudg< Sharswood, nor as a serious interference with the conduct of the campaign by-the Republican State Committee! It is of no consequence whatsoever, as we look at it. Assuredly it . cannot assist Judge Sharswood In the campaign. The Republjcans will conduct the campaign in their own w^fcy, nor suffer the inadvertent^ comment- of an outsider to control their notion or dampen their atdor. - ! s It does not require great oflprfc to show , " conohiBively., as we think, that the action and utterance^) oP .Judge Sharswood thirty years ago, touching State-Rights, are quite germane to the business o...

A Horrible Disaster,—The columns of the European German papers are filled with, the particulars of the greatest disaster that ever desolated any mining district. On the 1st of July the wooden framework of a 1,500 feet deep pit of a coal rnine in the neighborhood of Lugen, in Saxony,-gave way, blocking up with an impenetrable moss of timber and rock, the pit at a depth of about 300 ells from tho top. At the moment of tho disaster, 102 mennearly all the supporters of large familieswere working in the bottom of the mine. Their provisions were only calculated for one day. On the 5th of Julythe date of our latest news by mail, the place where the fallen masses had stopped the pit was of such a solid structure that the water was standing on it many feet high. ' From all sides the most available help was offeredbut the. conviction that nothing could be done soon enough to save the unfortunate miners weakened, as it seemsany energetic efforts. They were doomed to die of starvation and w...

We have never doubted Mr. Secretary Stanton. 'He has been .silent when speech seemed the order of the hour, and some have-therefore regarded ' him asatrimmer. Mr. Stautorihastrimmed his sails so as to convey the ship of State into still waters if possible. He early^aw that the Captain was drunk and irresponsible, the first mate in his dotage, the second mate imbeeijp, and the petty officers simply servile. He, as pilot, kept sober, and never left the wheel. He obeyed orders rather than abandon the ship to inebriate officers. This could not last long, of eourse; and so the other day, Mr. Johnson sent a note to Mr. Stanton saving to him "I will accept your resignation. " Mr. Stanton replied substantially,—"Thank you ; but I propose to stand by the ship until Congress returns. " We hope he will carry out his proposition by all means.
