Practical Farming i ——— [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 7 March 1896

Practical Farming i ——— Clean Culture When there is so much careiess , indifferent cultivation given to farm crops it Is a pleasure to record the fact that there is at least one section of country where clean culture is the rule , not the exception . We refer to that portion of Texas lying along the M . K . & T . Railway , between Deunison and Dallas . It was our pleasure to ride for two hours the other day through the black soil cotton belt where mile after mile of last year s cotton fields were in view in which there was not a trace of weeds to be seen . In smile places the old stalks were alreadv broken down and the ground otherwise being prepared for the spring plowing Iu some fields rye or crimson clover had been sown between the rows of cotton . This was green and growing and would soon furnish a forage crop or later a crop of grain , or might be turned under with stalks and thus help to keep up the fertility of the land . Whichever plan Is pursued It showed good f...

Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 7 March 1896

Garden and Orchard Preparing Strawberries for Fruiting F INE berries and large crops depend so much upon the treatment the plants receive from the spring of fruiting that no one can afford to neglect them then . Where the soil is free from weed seed the matter is vastly simplified . But such soil is not always to be had ; and the richer the soil the more apt it is to be infected with weeds . Subdue the weeds by running shallow cultivator down middles as early in spring as practicable . Scrape around and between plants with small , well sharpened weeding hoes , which will remove all weeds and not cut deep enough to injure roots . Then apply over rows , plants and all , about 500 pounds an acre of highly soluble commercial fertilizer , rich in potash . Stable manure and unleached wood ashes , if to be had in sufficient quantities are excellent . Ten good loads of manure and fifty bushels of ashes an acre will do , scattered over and around the plants ; the ashes on top , as they haste...

Practical Dairying [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 7 March 1896

Practical Dairying Dairying in Mexico The Kansas City Journal says that milch cows in Mexico ten years ago were • bred , and no milk , butter or cheese was produced . Fifteen years ago there was not a drop of cow s milk or a pound of butter in Monterey , Mexico . The natives depended entirely on goats milk . The opinion abroad in that region was that milch cows would not thrive in Mexico , and the natives made no attempt to try breeding . Condensed milk was first Imported from the United States in 1883 , and many have lived to see dairies established . Mr . Edmond Levan , from Texas , advised a Frenchman named La Grange to procure a few Jersey cows from the states and make a start . He did so and in five years he had a herd of fifty cows , as well as horses and pigs , with fruits and vegetables , and made money . This was the first dairy in Mexico , and to-day M . La Grange has made about $ 100 , 000 out of his business since 1887 . He has a ready sale for his products and next to n...
