of Great Is the Hog , [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 17 February 1902

of Great Is the Hog , ^|| HE flood hogs reaching the Chicago gj | market during the past ten days has national significanceIt means that the pork-producing territory tributary to Chicago which feeds the world can he depended on at all times for a supply . This year furnished the severest test to which the hog-raising helt could possibly be put . Xot in many years had such a severe drouth been felt , and prediction that there were no hogs in the country was rife yet , when the price justified shipments , porkers came in by the hundred thousand , emphafiling the producing capacity of Chicago territory under any and all conditions . The phenomenally heavy receipts also aneant much to the consuming public . Despite bearish tactics of buyers , prices were but slightly depressed . But for the big run a sensational rise in the price of pork was in the nature of things . Pork is the poor man s meat and the hog is at once the friend of the laborer in the city as he is of the producer in the ...

Cut Out the Spookseers . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 17 February 1902

Cut Out the Spookseers . ¦ giiAMMARION , the great French scienm entist , monkeyed with the spiritualistic buzz-saw and got hurt . There are things that can be weighed and things that cant . Then there are other things that would do you no good if you could weigh and measure them . Man s greatest side is his spiritual side , but he will gain nothing by attempting to take short cuts by the use of mediums and soothsayers . Every man must work out his own salvation in his own way . The universe is full of powerful thought-currents , as real— though unseen—as the current of the mightiest river . These may do you great good or . great harm . All depends upon your individual attitude . If you think good thoughts , or try to do so ; if your determination is to catch all the sunshine you can and give it out in kind words , honest work and good cheer you will be surprised to see how rapidly your power will increase . If your thought is devoted largely to tearing someone else down or seeking ...

Shaw Wants Swine Raisers to Reason . .- | aSa-Fa > a * f- » i * aii * ia i—Manaia ^ , — nm j | | a-aa . |||| S | ¦¦¦ IBl * lliaii Invulnerable to ridicule , Shaw , tho Minnesota sage , is vigorously pushing his bacon hog propaganda . His latest appeal to swine gro-. v-.-rs o £ the corn bolt is that they will indulge in a little reasoning with him . Is it not true he asks , that Poland China and Duroc Jersey swine are over-refined ? Is it not true that tho breeding powers in each have biea weakened during recent years ? I speak of them as breeds . Is it not true that they have been so converging in type in the effort to get the easy feeding , quick maturing hog , that if both were painted the same color , one could hardly tell them apart ? Is it not true also that the Berkshire breeders would be in the same boat practlcallv , but for the fact that recently they have modified their typo o £ hog and...

* ome Observations . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 17 February 1902

* ome Observations . BT TOST VOBRICK . Yes , it certainly does require all kinds of people to make np a world . If people were all of one kind , one mind or one ambition there would be no development of the varied industries that go to make this an interesting or even tolerable world . Of course it makes a whole lot of us mad to have a jackass wind-jammer , especially an official one , let loose such a tirade against bowing down to European plunkeylsm aa that Washington incident of last week . But such gas explosions only serve to make the real American spirit , the spirit that put the Unltsd States in the foremost rank of nations , stand out the more bold . We need just such wind-punchers in our business . They relieve a monotony in the real thing of life that without relief wonld breed dyspepsia and bad homor . If the exclusive exclusive s of this oountry want to bow so low and worship European flunkeyism we can see no reason why they should not be accorded that privilege . If the...
