THE FARMERS' SIDE [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

THE FARMERS SIDE A FARM YARD PARABLE . A CERTAIN farm yard on the isle of Atlantis possessed great natural advantages . There were rich scratching grounds and comfortable roosting places for all the fowls . The chickens , although of many breeds , lived happily together and took a great deal of pride . in their yard . l The owner of this yard granted his fowls unusual privileges . He allowed them to make their own laws arid administer their own government . It was a government for the fowls , of the fows and by the fowls . The wisdom of this policy was soon manifest . It be came the most prosperous yard on tbe whole island . The population increased rapidly . The amount of exports was large . The fowls were noted for intelligence and virtue . Although there had been strife and dissension great fowls had arisen to the occasion and the yard remained a united and harmonious whole . Now while these fowls were obliged to scratch for . their worms , an ample supply of corn was furnished t...

A HUNDRED MILES TO THE DOCTOR ' ¦ [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

A HUNDRED MILES TO THE DOCTOR ¦ is a long trip , but who would not gladly mate . it , if by so doing one could relieve the sufferings of a loved one at borne ? But when the journey proves of no avail , as far as relief is concerued , but simply a waste of time and money , it is indeed discouraging . Mr . Frank Smith , of Belt , Mont .,: brings the situation vividly to mind in a letter dated Dec . 8 , 1895 : My wife had been sick for over two years . I used to go as far as one hundred miles to the doctors for her , but none of them could help her . She suffered intense pain in her abdomen , and was frequently unable to leave her bed . She seemed to have frequent internal hemorrhages , as large quantities of clotted blood would pass from her system . I happened to read In a paper about Dr . Peter s Blood Vitalizer . I sent for some . My wife tried it , and after using four bottles she was well . It is indeed a most excellent preparation—a veritable household necessity . It has done us...

Fins , Feathers ^^ AMoney Bees [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

Fins , Feathers ^^ AMoney Bees ESSENTIALS TO SUCCESS . I AM thoroughly convinced , says A . F . S . Lyons , in Poultry Monthly , of two - essentials to make poultry raising and keeping a success . One is to keep the fowls free ; from lice and vermin , and the other is to have a dry , wellrventilated building . Lice and dampness cause nine-tenths of all the trouble in raising poultry , either for meat or eggs . Can you at all times have a dry house with loam bottom ? I say No ! fronx experience . In moist weather it will gather dampness , even though not a drop of water can enter at sides or roof . The same with sand or gravel , and the same with boards if they are covered with dirt . Put on the driest dirt possible , to get , and if not properly ventilated , it soon becomes damp , and dampness causes no end of trouble . Better have a few cracks and fresh air than warm , poorly ventilated rooms . I believe the tight-building idea is being carried too far , and is already showing itse...

, EXTENDING THE OCEAN CABLES . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

, EXTENDING THE OCEAN CABLES . ? IA HE senate eoriimittee on foreign relations has agreed A to a ; compromise ; bill for a cable from our west coast to Hawaii arid Japan . The bill authorizes the postmaster-general to agree to pay a subsidy of $ i 6 o ,- QOO a year to any company which may lay this cable . The only Democratic member of the committee who voted for the bill was Morgan of . Alabama . He is always found alive to our highest interests as a nation in relation to foreign commerce . Had he been president in place of Cleveland he would not have attempted to . crush out the republican movement in Hawaii and turn that people back into the hands of an effete monarchy . Any person who opposes an enterprise like this intended to further our commerce with Japan and the east , \ is simply turning the hands backward on the dial of historic progress .
