Do you know of any good remedy for them?—W . fl . D . Answer—I have just heard of a new remedy which is said to be the best and most efficient cure known for the gopher pest Around your field of wheat or other grain sow a strip of rye about two rods wide . fDffERIMENT STATIONS [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 May 1915

fDffERIMENT STATIONS Reports from the FantAmLfalV Effective Ground Squirrel Eradication It has been found that ground squirrels and prairie dogs can be eradicated at a cost of two to four cents an acre . Jhese are the results secured by an investigation carried on co-operatively by the North Dakota experiment station and the United States Biological Survey . Oats was found to be the best grain and strychnine the best poison . The formula is a little complicated and it should be made up by someone familiar with making such preparations . To secure lasting results the campaign of eradication should be carried on over at least a . county . Mr . Piper of the Biological Survey found that the strychnine is taken up more readily in the cheek pouches than through the stomach and that only one-fifth as much poison taken thus directly into the circulation is required to kill . Advantage is taken of this fact by having the poison made in a paste and coated on the oats which results in the assi...

PQULTRy [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 May 1915

PQULTRy Handle Eggs Carefully Mechanical injury to eggs ,, due to rough ¦ .. _!_ causes a great loss to the egg ¦ Z _ f every year , as well as a food loss ; d ? fe consumers . Eggs that are comItely wrecked ( and termed mashed , in commerce ) are hot only worthless themelves but they soil a number of eggs , Setwise good . When the shell is so broken that the contents are escaping the L is termed a leaker . Another class of eggs which have a technical term applied to them because of mechanical injury are the checks . Checks are eggs the membranes of which are intact but with cracked shells . The egg industry has to contend with an enormous number of these . If the crack or defect is visible only when the egg is held before a candle or when it is gently tanned against another sound egg it is called a blind check . This tapping of one egg against another is called clicking by the egg men . Leakers are thrown out at every stage of handling . The country merchant usually throws them awa...

^^""^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ e ^ a / a ^ Snl 1 * ' [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 May 1915

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ e ^ a / a ^ Snl 1 * Dog Is Farm Sheep s Worst Enemy The number of sheep in the thirty-six farm states , which do not include any in the Western Division , could be increased by ISO per cent , it is estimated , without displacing other live stock . Some authorities believe that the increase could be even as much as 500 per cent without serious interference with the number of other animals . An increase of ISO per cent in these thirty-six states would mean in money $ 144267 , 000 . In a new publication of the Department of Agriculture , Farmers Bulletin 652 , the responsibility for this loss to the country is laid upon the sheep-killing dog . Sheep-killing dogs , it is said , are the principal cause of the marked decrease in the numbers of sheep on American farms . In the ten years between 1900 and 1910 the number of sheep in the country , exclusive of the states in the Western Division , decreased 3 , 900 , 000 head , in face of the fact that during t...
