Listen , Maxie said , This guy s so tweedy he only fastens the first two buttons on his pajamas . Even his undershirts have double vents . So did Charlie try to be agreeable or what , asked Mike . The Magic Lantern [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 27 October 1960

The Magic Lantern by Tom Scheye School for Scoundrels Whether it was a cool sobriety which the cold night brought or perhaps a desire to be one up on the film , I dont know ; but every time I was convulsed by School for Scoundrels I found myself searching for some flaw in the picture . The search was fruitless . School for Scoundrels is adapted from the works of Stephen Potter . Potter s treatises demonstrate how to win without actually cheating or gamesmanship , and such various facets of this skill as partymanship , and woomanship . Parts of all these works are included with a description of the educational institution established to teach gamesmanship . This general context focuses around the- academic progress of one particular student , Henry Palfrey . Palfrey is a thorough bumbler in the grand sense . As the movie opens , he runs into a package-laden beauty and even bumbles the cleaning up process . He is late for his bus every morning ; his employees ignore him ; and later he...

Author of I Was a Teen-age Dwarf , The Many _^ _Vr Loves of DobieGillis , etc . ) A FRAT TO REMEMBER Every year , as we all know , the Benevolent and Protective Order of Collegiate Fraternities awards a highly coveted prize to the fraternity house which , in its judgment , has done the most to promote and enhance the fraternity way of life . The prize this year—eight hundred pounds of white putty—goes to the Signa Phi Nothing chapter of the South Dakota College of Dentistry and Renaissance Art . The award this year is exceptionally richly deserved , for the Signa Phi Nothing house is the very model of all a fraternity should be . It is , first of all , a most attractive house physically . The outside walls are tastefully covered with sequins . Running along the upper story is a widows walk , with a widow stationed every three feet . Moored to the chimney pot is the Graf Zeppelin . Indoors , the house gives an impression of simple , casual char...

Researcher Tracks Hoya ' For History Behind Name . [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 27 October 1960

Researcher Tracks Hoya For History Behind Name . by John Hayes It seems that at some time another almost everyone has asked the question What in the world does Hoya mean ? Georgetown students used to scream this word at football games . Today they scream it at basketball and polo games and even call themselves Hoyas . The trouble is that none of them know what it means . Actually that isnt true since many of them have definite theories on its meaning . The truth is that hardly one of those theories agree . Here are presented the theories that seem the most interesting and valid . In the Georgetown Archives there is a letter from John Bowen , the secretary to the President of the University , to Frederick Houston which gives this explanation . The word Hoya evolved as a cheer at sporting events . In the early days of the Law School , a textbook used was Blackstone s Commentaries which described the bailiff at the opening of court sessions crying aloud Oh , Hear , Oh , Hear . This whe...

However , he said , our parents would never accept such a plan for fear the students would attempt to save money for week-ends and such by skipping meals and endangering their health . Willie Werweis then made a comment to the effect that if someone is a college student and all , he should be mature enough to go to classes , eat the right food , and in general come out of the rain . And I must say I agree with Willie . I feel sure that the Georgetown Gentleman is a whole casserole of maturity . He always has the sense to eat the right food . And if you dont believe me , just go check the trays he leaves behind ali over the cafeteria , when he s finished with dinner . in The general outcome of the discussion can be telt m the opinions put forth by Charlie Ross and Chris Hankinson . It came down to this : Our proposal is understandably unsatisfactory to the Administration ; and their pro...
