For this cause, however wounding to our feel ings and our status, we acknowledge candidly the times, the hard times of Rapides are on us and rubbing hard our finances. No better signs or evil omens of all this can be conceived, than when an established paper of over twenty seven years of age, has to come down to such a size as our present one, and sole for the want and lack of present paying patronage. DeOtbs of Distinguished Persons In 1872. The year now past has been remarka ble over most of its immediate predeces e for the number of persons whl died in it who were of unusual prominence be fore world. A review of the death-roll would be interesting at this tine. It would certainly recall many mourufll thoughts inspired during the year by the sudden taking off of this or that conspicu oas public character, and which, in the hurry and whirl of our busy livas were necessarily transitory. The great names which naturally occur to us the moment we begin to think of death's doilgs dur ing the past twelve months, arothose of Greeley, Seward and Morse. rbhse were our own countrymen, and it is vorthy of notice that the old world has nq losses of equal value and distinction.
