LYON. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 November 1861

LYON. Sing, bird, on green Missouri's plain, The saddest song of sorrow ; f)rop tears, oh clouds, in gentlest rain Ye from the winds can borrow ; Breathe out, ye winds, your softest sigh ; Weep, flowers, in dewy splendor, For him who knew well how to die, But never to surrender. Uprose serene the August sun Upon that day of glory ; Upcurled from musket and f rom gun The war cloud gray and hoary. It gathered like a funeral pall. Now broken and now olended. Where rang the bugle's angry eaU, And rank with rank contended. Four thousand men, as brave and true As e'er went forth in daring. Upon the foe that m rning threw The strength of their despairing. They feared not death—men bless the field That patriot soldiers died on— Fair Freedom's cause was sword and shield, And at their head was Lyon ! Their leader's troubled soul looked forth From eyes of troubled brightness ; $ad soul! the burden of the North Had pressed out all its lightness. He gazed upon the unequal tight, His ranks all re...

How the Rebels try to get Arms. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 November 1861

How the Rebels try to get Arms. A few days ago a person doing business in New 1 York, but not in the anna business, tied his horse i near the door of an arms and ammunition stor«, | walked into the store, and asked the price of govern ment percussion caps. Answer— 44 One dollar per thousand." %i Can't I buy thein any cheaper down East V 1 \ 14 No." 44 Tell me, candidly, what is your opinion about a speculation. I can get three dollars per thousand for caps delivered in Havana, and you know, from the nature of my business, it will be ver/ easy for me to ship them. What do you think ? Would you go in V f 44 No, I would not.'* 44 Why ?" j 44 The risk would be too great." "Wiiyso?" 44 I should be obliged to get a permit from the : Chief of Police to deliver you a million percussion caps : an escort would be detailed to go with those caps from here to your place of business. They know you do not deal in percussion caps, and your store would thenceforth be watched." 44 Would this also be ...

The Union—Now and Forever. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 November 1861

The Union—Now and Forever. BY OFTARLKS HENRY HROOIC. Ilark ! hark ! His tlu» shout of the nation rings out, And the soul of her song like an ocean is swelling; On the dream of her night Breaks a beam of the light, ; And her weary, wan watchers of morning are telling ; From the sea to the lakes Every freeman awakes To hail the bright morn of her might, as it breaks, And shout, by the limner that Treason forsakes— 44 The Union—Now and Forever !" Long, long was the night of her Wrong, but the Right, With the tiashing of steel, like a day spring, hath broken, And its dawn shows the van Marching on to a ma-n. To die in the call which his country hath spoken; F.»r that call now awakes All the seas and the lakes. To catch the bright morn of her might, as it breaks, And shout by the banner that Treason forsakes— 4 * The Uuion—Now and Forever !" Ah ! "Poor Floyd." [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 November 1861

"Poor Floyd." Floyd's fate will be a warning through all time to American politicians. 4 4 Poor Floyd" is now his title of reproach. The very men who used him as their tool and rejoiced in his treason, salute him. since their purposes have been accomplished, with scolTs and sneers; while by loyal citizens he is held in universal execration. Had he died in one of his raids in Western Virginia it had been better for him ; his name would sooner have been forgotten. Our readers hive already been informed how Floyd, while occupying oue of the highest aud most honorable positions under the Government, used his power and influence in aid of the conspirators who were plotting the present rebellion : how, while under the obligation of a solemn oath to support the Constitution and obey the laws he put arms in the hands of traitors who wtre preparing to violate and set at naught the Constitution and the laws; and how when released from the duties ot his office, he ignobly fled frem the Capital...

Importance of Beaufort. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 26 November 1861

Importance of Beaufort. An article in De Bow's Review, for the year 1858, which the editor of the Bulletin has secured and perused, gives the following fine account of the harbor and island of Port Royal, with the town of Beaufort, from all of which it may be inferred that the footing our Government has obtained in South Caro lina, is of much greater significance than was at first generally su; posed; and that some big fights may be expected before it is evacuated : 44 Ou Port Royal is an area of islands, beautiful and healthy as can be desired, SOO miles nearer the mouth of the Mississippi than New York, and reached from Europe at all seasons of the year by a most desirable route. When the whole North is one sheet of ice and snow, every st p of the South becomes more temperate and open, while the internal com merce, founded on diverse productions, will give em ployment toa di'ose population. The bay of Port Royal U nearly if uot quite equal to that of Xew York; and there are at lea...
