CONCERNING JOCKEYS. I The Habit* anil Training; or IMMM Klder*. "Yes, I earn a good deal of raoney every season, but I have to work hard for it, and I think I am deserving of all I get. A jockey, in order to be successful, must constantly subject himself, to a rigorous course of training and, although people who are not posted on such matters would hardly thiuk it, the best riders in the country—men who earn from $5,000 to $10,000 every summer—frequently go to bed hungry every night for weeks." "Why is that P'! The Dead Prince Consort's Room. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 17 September 1885

The Dead Prince Consort's Room. A long tlino ago I went over tho houso iiml OHM to a room' which litil been religiously closed for years. It was (i|iciii'(l by special order aud there issued from it a certain hallowed odor which exhales on opening a lougclosed sanctuary. The blinds were drawn and semi-darkness |jrevailed. We drew near, a table and my guide explained that this was tho late Prince, Consort's room, and everything was today just as he had left it when he died. The dust was nearly a inch thick on his writing-desk; a half-used quill was lying crosswlso whdre it had fallen from his hand or its rack; there were sevural articles about a paper-weight, a book, and to the right uear the abandoned quill, a little carved frame, and in this frame aportrait. 1 think I can sco it now—the youthful Victoria painted by Winterhalter. Her majesty has a sweet, fair face, and rosebud mouth, and she wears an apple-green gown, .tho tint just glimmering through some folds of lace. This pictur...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 17 September 1885

A number of our advertising patrons are beginning to complain that they are doing more than their share for the welfare of Sausalito in sustaining the News. They argue that whereas a large wealthy class do no more than subscribe, they not only do the same but pay out monthly for advertising which is of little benefit to them, particularly in some line for several months to come. With but few exceptions our business men have done everything reasonable to assist the News and as to subscribing our people have nearly all responded, but has any one ever stopped to calculate that even though all our families subscribed and every business advertised at the average of $6 per quarter that there would then be an income to justify the establishment of a journal like the News. The question is do they consider or care whether the paper itself has not been making continuous sacrifices for the welfare of Sausalito? If there is any one thick-headed enough to doubt this let him examine our books. We...
