This select party were inter- ested in what they had heard about the great Plains of Texas but took the occasion to make an inspection for themselves. All the way along the trip they took notes. Arriving at Chicago, the interest was in- creased when the senior member of the firm offered one of the crowd, a jovial Dutchman, John Lauer, by name, one hundred and sixty acres of the best land in the Panhandle, if he would find a better looking field of wheat anywhere along the route from Chicago to Hereford than could be found in the Hereford coun- try.
