Page 2 The Brand March 20 1997 Letter To The EraroK I would like to take this opportunity to use our stu- dent publication as a tool to reach the campus of HSU. Many readers of The Brand may have noticed several billboards throughout the city of Abilene which read " PORNOGRAPHY RUINS PEOPLE" and then go on to plead with each and every one of us to take a stand. As a Christian a student at this university and a sinner I personally am pleading with every man and woman on this campus to not just pass these signs by but to use their message to take a good look at our- selves. PORNOGRAPHY DOES INDEED RUIN PEO- PLE! I know this because I'm currently watching from the sidelines as it literally tears apart the marriage of two people I love my mom and step-dad. I could find it very easy to be judgmental toward the guilty party in this tragedy if it were not for one simple fact I myself have had my own personal strug- gle with this tool of Satan. Pornography is such an easy rut to fall into w...

BSM missions spreads gospel across Texas By Kathy Muramoto Managing Editor During spring break a team from the Hardin-Simmons Baptist Student Ministries experienced Mission Arlington's "go and tell" ministry first hand before traveling on to Houston to work with one of its baptist missions. The group traveled across the state sharing the gospel by word and action. Team sponsor Beth Smith said that the students "really saw the benefits of going out and serving" by ministering in Arlington while they witnessed a different approach in Houston. March 20 1997 The Brand Page 7 From God!!! Beach Reach chal- lenges participants By Joy Evans Features Editor Spring break at South Padre Island is notorious for being the number one party scene in America. Thousands of college students gather at the beach to drink alco- hol and celebrate yet there arc also those who come to the beach to minister and evangelize. Beach Reach is a ministry in which college students go to South Padre and offer free van rides sun screen and a pan- cake breakfast to people on the beach. At the same time they make an effort to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with those who are lost in this world. The ministry was started 17 years ago by Bobby King and others who had the desire to minister to college students by meeting physical needs before attempting to meet spiritual ones. Todd Peterson a third year veteran Beach Reach participant and this year's group leader for Abilene explained that the purpose of Beach Reach is to reveal God's love through as aspec...

Page 8 The Brand March 20 1997 Oscar Stop Sling Blade Secrets & Lies make pre-Oscar runs in Abilene By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief Last month's Academy Award selec- tions left many people asking many of the same questions namely who in the world are Billy Bob Thornton and Marianne Jean-Baptistc? And what's a "sling blade?" Well Abilene finally got some answers this past weekend with its first look at the best actor and supporting actress nominees in their highly touted yet lesser-known dramas Sling Blade and Secrets & Lies. Both proved more than worthy of their recent pre-Oscar success- es which may be topped by an award or two come March 24. Thornton who also wrote and directed Sling Blade is also up for next week's best screenplay award. However it's the acting that makes his spectacular film about a mental patient's triumphs and downfalls in a harsh world come alive he delivers one of last year's most simplistically powerful performances in a role deserving of an Oscar....

Page 10 The Brand March 20 1997 March Madness takes it toll on El Guai "March Madness" was upon me once again. It's the time to separate the men from the boys; a time to get in front of thousanckof people and prove whether you have a gut of solid steel or arc merely a pretender to the throne of glory. Only the elite few get to make this pil- grimage to try and secure their place among the immor- tals. They arc the determined the proud the revelers on South Padre Island. It seemed like the ideal place to go and gather information for the NCAA tournament. Virtually every team there had representatives from their campus on the island. I filled out my predictions like all the basketball faithful only to sec the unthinkable happen Georgia loses in the first round to Tcnnessce-Chatanooga. Then South Carolina falls to unheard of unheralded Coppin- State. Already my bracket picks were ruined and the tour- nament had barely begun. Page 2 The Brand March 31 1997 Stop cloning around; God is in control Could wc be more ignorant as a race of sinful human beings? Arc wc begging God to come down from the heavens and prove His almighty power to the world? Do wc realize exactly what we've done or could possibly do in the future? These are questions I ask myself over and over again when pondering the topic of cloning is it ethically sound? Docs it hold certain benefits for the human race? Can it be used in a way that God won't simply wipe the earth clean out of disgust? In the beginning I felt that certain positives could come from the sheep cloned in Scotland. This is a process that could possibly be used in the future to medically research disease and provide duplicated organs to those in desperate need of transplants. Sounds pretty good to me. Then I started seriously thinking about it. How could you duplicate organs without a body to carry them in? Well you probably can't. For some reason I thought the cloning con...

March 31 1997 The Brand Page 5 Bloom's clothing line is a gift from God By Jake Long Staff Writer By no ordinary means is Todd Bloom your typical Hardin-Simmons University student. Perhaps most people associate him with his gridiron accomplishments on Saturday afternoons during the fall. Over the last two seasons Bloom has been named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. HI All-Amcrican team as a slotback. However others might be unaware that Bloom is the creator and designer for his own line of clothing apparel Barrel Company. Originally Bloom first thought about entering the fashion industry during a conversation with some friends in Santa Barbara. His acquaintances had an idea to manufacture clothing after the beach named Green Barrel. In November of 1995 Bloom decid- ed to take the idea to another level by designing a line of clothes that were appropriate for the beach. At the same time he changed the name from Green Barrel to Barrel Company. "I thought Barrel Com...

Page 6 The Brand March 31 1997 Megastars barely survive surprisingly quiet plot By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief Posing as a political action thriller Alan J. Pakula's The Devil's Own has a lot to learn about keeping the umpli in its action; at times you think you're watch- ing an episode of All In the Family. For months previews of the political drama involving yet another IRA (Irish Republican Army) vs. Conniving British Government struggle have revealed what looked to be one masterful piece of work. That it's not. On the other hand you really can't completely lose-out with not one but two megamovic juggernauts in Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt. Both equally keep Pakula's attempts at playing on political sympathies above water. Ford plays Sergeant Tom O'Mcara a New York City cop with a wonderful family and an avid disgust for violence. He's fired his gun exactly four times in a 23-ycar career as one of New York's Finest which is admirable in itself. Plus he's the conscientious type t...

In early March U2 released their eleventh album Pop which contains the band's new upbeat disco style. Many U2 fans will be surprised by the new sound for better or worse. Pop ignores the group's familiar style and jumps ship into the technodisco craze. The album displays a solid mix of both fast and slow tracks throughout. Pop begins with three consecutive tracks of similar technodisco style. For those who have heard "Discotheque" on the radio it's a good example of the pattern of style that is found in "Do You Feel Loved" and "Mofo." A major influence on U2's technodisco sound can be traced to the producer of Pop Flood. Flood has assisted in the production of albums by Depcche Mode Erasure ...
