Local and General. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 9 January 1918

SLocal and Garneral. The counting of the votes in connection with the Referendum on cont:scrip ion has just about con cluded, and, as known, the result was a more emphatic No than in October of last vear. At Oiyen the vote. especi:lly of absentees, proved much heavier than antici pated, with the result that ordinary ballot papers had to be altered to meet the emergency. There were 27'7 ordinary and 136 absentee votes, and the work proved con clusively that two men cannot s. tisfactorilv conduct a Federal contest at Ouyen. It was a remark able fact t1hat at this booth every. one of the Sttcs were represented, and even the Federal Territory of the north had its voter present. The record is unique. 1918. People have settled down again to war!, and will try to stand the weatTher. Things were very quiet in the district throughout the holidays, and with a numoer there n as dispieasure owing to the drought. From various causes several orders for liquid refreshment could not b- fulfilled, a...

Our Train Service. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 9 January 1918

Our Train Service. \Ae have an altered train ser ice. Some flatter t eanselves it -s improved, but we douht. Start ing -rom this morning, the train ) tram 1e!'boarne will arrive at Ocu Sya on ',ednesday as ou Sunday, Sat S 1.r2. and ieave again at 1o.3o im. This means that instead of a ,l:'ng Melbourne :.._t 6.4e a u:. on , .'d..a. ryou leave at 5.x6 p r_. hat's al r.ight frotnt the point of speed, but where's the advantage .oherwise ? The country loses in 'stead of gaining, fo i takes two ?trains to cope w:ith the service, vwhereas if the train left Melbourne ot 6.40 (or a few minutes later) :.m., and ran through in daylight ,ion the fast schedule, one train would do for the two trips. Then I with a daylight service each way, the dining and sleeping cars could be taken off, thus ciffcting a say i-ng both in haulage and salaries. These are two such palpable ,say ings that no one wonders nt to".m. escaping the intelligence of those who rule our .railways. There are others, however, w...
