NO B[?]ES NO FRUIT CROP. The importance of bees to the orchardist is [?]mmed up by an American authority a follows:— [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 17 December 1914

NO EES NO FRUIT CROP. Tlio imi>i-t;iuce ot bees to the orcli ardifit is Biniued up by an American :intlinrltv follows:— 1. All bts wherever made, and all general obtrvations, agree that many varieties ol apples, peaches, pears, plums, swe; cherries aud grapes are unable to a a crop of fruit when limi ted to theiiywn pollen. 2. Somcvnrieites of the above nam ed fruits re particularly self-fertile, and a la ware apparently whole self fertile, thegh the degree of fertility varies botwn rather wide limits, de pending uju location, season, vigor of trees, etc. 3. All ivcstigutor.s agree that, as a general lie, the fruit resulting from cross.ng, ean in self-fertile varieties is larger an better developed than tbe self-fertile, iuit. This is explained by saying tkt foreign pollen furnished a greater amulus to growth because it is moro niqitablo to tbe pistil, and not because i ".ransmits size, character o; the varie;}' from which it Came. 4. All ev.deice at hand contradicts the theory i...

Jf the toil is too still, llii! addition of a liberal supply of liorse manure well worked in will loosen it. t/ight sandy soil will be improved by the addition of clay and cow inanuro. The ground should be trenchcd, and the manure applied "some time, before the plants are put it. Turn the soil over frequently, and leave the surface as rough as possible, so that the air ; may sweeten it. As the Dahlia re quires plenty of water, it is necessary to see lliat the ground isj. woll drained. IP early blooms are required, put" out plants early in September. "The Day." A RAILWAY POET AND THE KAISER. [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 24 December 1914

"The Day." A Railway Poet and the Kaiser.. Many, powerful poems have been inspired by the war, but probably nothing finer has been penned than the following, which is the work of Mr Henry Chappell, a railway porter at Bath, and which was first pub lished in the Standard. Mr Chappell is known, amongst his comrades as the "Bath Railway Poet." Yoa boasted tho Day, and you toasted the Day, . ' And now the Day has come, Blasphemer, braggart, and coward all, Little you reek of the numbing ball, The blasting shell, or the "white arm's" fall, ' As they speed poor- humans home. You spied for the Day, you lied for the Day, And woke the Day's red spleen, Monster, who asked God's aid Divine; Then strewed His seas ■ with the ghastly- mine; Not all tho waters o£ the Rhine Can wash thy foul' hands cloan.. TURF TOPICS. [Newspaper Article] — Ballan Times — 24 December 1914

TURF TOPICS. (By •'Plemington.") ' For many years CauJlield has pro vided the programme for Melbourne racegoers on Boxing Day. The meet ing lias never aspired to bo of more —tllO Clffft money for competition has from time to 'time been so increased that it now reaches a very substantial sum. Jn the present circumstances, 'tis scarcely likol.v that any further addi tion will be made to tue stakes. 'J'ho club will do very well if the manage ment can contrive to keep up the i present standard tor the present. The I chief event now in tlie lioxing Day ! programme is the Hopetoun Cup, so named out of compliment to one ot our lirst and perhaps most popular governor generals. Class is but poorly represented in the lield, but none the less we may expect a good contest. The handicap per did not find it necessary to go very high with the weights, and thus owners, as far as can be seen, have little cause tor complaint. Sir Solo ran a fair race in the Melbourne, and here the company cannot be c...
