THE HURUNUI. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 16 January 1877

THE HURUWUL (FROm THE HIOMe NIWes, OV. 24.) Some little time since mention was made in this journal of the outbreak of scarlet fexer and diphtheria on board the emigrant ship Hurunul, belonging to the New Zotland Shipping Company, Captain Boyd. The ship had been in quarantine for weeks, and it was suggested that tih inspection of the emigrants must orilginally have' been very imperfect, and almost a farce. Indeed the marvel would be if a competent surgeon could examine a ship's load of people withl auy kind of even relative accuracy for the starvation feu which the statute law of this empire allows him. Misfortunes have thickened upon the luckless lurunnl. Last Friday week, when on her way outwards, she came into collision with a vessel which Is now proved to have been the Greek barque Pater. The Friday was a wild and tempes= tuous night, being just the middle of a short period, now over, of storm and snow. Unfortunately, the rater suffered severely. Eight lives were ultimately lost...

By.J. 3arl.ts FOTrnlasIarc, M.D., M.R.CS.L The progrees of physiological psychn logy, of the investigation of the work. 4. ing. of the mind, has taught us, in un Stnltnkable accents, the strong tendency -wbich.exists for a habit to be formes by repetition of anything. After a thing has been done several times it becomes cs. ;ceedingly easy to do it again. There is, in feet, in the nervous system a great readiness to take on an attitude which has been assumed before. We all recoznaso bow it becomes necessary for every one to rehearse a part before acting it, and how quickly a species of habit or Imitative attitude is formed. It is widely recognised that practice makes perfect, and that what was once difllcult becomes easy by repitition of it. Three are bur illnstra. iones of a law aniversally ecknowledged.
