MURDER ON THE DAINTREE. The Cooktown Herald of November 17 reports tbe murder of three men on the Daintree. A camp of cedar-getters on their own account was formed by Thomas Hanley and John Regan, with whom was associated another man named George. On the 5th of November the party was at woik some five or Bix miles higher up the river than tbe main camp, abbuc 12 miles from the mouth. On tbe morning of thac day Hanley aud his party left, tbe camp for their cedar work, and the former promised his wife on leaving that he would return in the evening, but he would not bring the whole of the party, as the distance was too far to walk. This was tbe last seen of the party alive. The dead bodies of tbe men were afterwards found in the scrub fearfully mutilated. That of Hanley was in a sitting posture, leaning against a tree, with a spear wound through his body from side to side, his two legs chopped off below the knees, one leg lying beside the body, the other missing ; the head scalped. SCENES IN THE ASSEMBLY. Ojse of the stormiest scenes of the eeesiou in the Assembly ? took place on November 28 in connexion with the Barwon election report;. Oa the report being presented, the Speaker called attention to the, fact that costs were awarded to thn petitioner .without the grounds being Btated, whereupon Mr L&lor moved that the report be referred back. to the committee* : Mr. Sarviqo . accepted the proposal, on condition that the ' reference applied only to. the technical point of costs, bat Mr ? Lalor wqnld^apt hear of this, and contended that the report wan ' bad in substance. Mr. L=»vien was charged with bribery, and if ' guilty he ought by law to be disqualified, and the report should ? be sent back with a view to itB.ulterar.ion. The Theatres [Newspaper Article] — The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil — 22 December 1877

The successful career of Mr. Creswick at the Academy of Music has been, as in former months, the most notice able piece of theatrical intelligence; Mr. Creswick has played several parts he has not before given in Melbourne, amongst them Richard the Third. As showing tbe appreciation this actor has met with in Melbourne, we quote The Argus criticism on his rendering of this part :— 'Mr. Creswick 'a estimate of the character of Richard i» the very rational one that his general bad qualities were incidental to his ambition. That is to say, that he was not cruel, nor remorseless, nor unscrupulous, out of an unreasoning desire to be so, but that, having ambitious aims, and finding some obstacles in his way, he removed the obstacles without hesitation, not caring what means no employed to do so. In carrying out this estimate of the character it is possible to free it of some of its traditional repulsiveness, and to invest it with a dramatic simplicity which favours its acceptance by the a...

THE PACIFIC ROUTE. [Newspaper Article] — The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil — 22 December 1877

THE PACIFIC ROUTE. From some descriptions of the Pacific route which appeared about a year and a Lull ago in The Argus, we quote some passages which sufficiently elucidate the more; prominent points of the journey depicted in our sketches. Of hie 'approach and visit- to . Hoqq'.uIu, in the Sandwich Islands, tbe writer said :— The Pacific sea, acroBS wide belts of which the ship steams bo gently that tumblers may be allowed to Btand on the table almoBt brimful, becomes monotonous on the sixth or Seventh day ont from port, and one ia hardly ever called upon to glance over the ship's Bide, unless it be to notice some such small matter as tbe direction of the easy swell or the movements of a school of porpoises, until land isdiBcovered, and then up come the binoculars and telescopes for the inspection of something new. 'The first view we had of Oabu, the most important member of the Sandwich Islands group, showed us two . ranges of mountains, which, as we approached them Blowly, roBe up...

A special train took a large number of visitors from Melbourne, His Excellency the Governor and a party of friends going up by this train. The Handicap Hurdle Race was won by Mr. R. THE REV. THOMAS JONES. [Newspaper Article] — The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil — 22 December 1877

THE REV. THOMAS JONES. . Although the Rev. Thomas Jones has not long held a place among the preachers of Melbourne, he has daring that time acquired a wide, popularity, which extends far beyond the limits of his regular congregation. This popularity is due in a large measure to his -evident sincerity and earnestness, and to his poetic eloquence, full of homely illustration and rich warm colouring. In presenting his portrait to our readers, we may quote. a, notice of the ministerial life of Mr. Jones, which was ptintediin a Melbourne journal about the time of his arrival in this colony : — The Rev. Thomas Jones, who has been appointed to the pastorate of the Independent Churcb, Collins-street, Melbourne, was born at Rhayader, county Radnor, of humble bat respectable Welsh parents. His father was a commercial traveller. The language of his childhood was English, though alt his early fame and popularity was gained by eloquent Welsh sermons and lectures, and for many years in later life...
