Vox populi has, during the last few days decreed that the Legislature of New South Wales must follow the example of the Imperial Parliament, and erase from its statute book the infliction of the penalty of death for the crime of rapeT ' The proper end of punishment,'' snys Paley, 'is not the- satisfaction of justice, but the prevention of crime,' and wo believe with Douglas Jerrold, that 'all hanging is a b'ingle,' and that the gallows will eventually be abolished, even for the crime of murder. It is agreed on all hands that the infliction of death can only be justified on grounds of strict and cogent necessity. Has that necessity been proved 1 has the punishment of death prevented or diminished the crime of murder ? We unhesitatingly answer— No. As a rule, where capital punishment has most prevailed, the crime for which it has been enforced has most abounded ; we also say, that where capital punishment has been the rarest, and also, that just in proportion as capital punishment has...

GRENFELL DISTRICT COURT. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 31 May 1879

GRENFELL DISTRICT COURT. Dog Poisoning.— Complaints have again been made to us of the reprehensible practice of scattering poisoned meat about the town, for the purpose of destroying dogs. Not only have several useful and favourite dogs met with an untimely death, but a numbur of different kinds of poultry have been killed. The offender is, perhaps, not aware that parties who unlaw fully, feloniously, and maliciously place such baits in tho public Btreets, are liable to a heavy penalty. The person gnilty of the act during the week is informed that ho is suspected, and it is probable, if lie foolishly repeats the offence, that it will be brought homo to him, whon he need not expect a whit more mercy than he haa shown to the unoffending animals he has so wantonlv destroyed. House Accident. — A few days since a lad of the name of John M'Gill, of Kikiamah, was thrown from his horse and broke his lpg. Dr. SchaBfer, who sot the fractured limb, tells us that the boy is doing as well as can...

DISEASES OF THE MIND. By A CYNIC. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 31 May 1879

DISEASES OF THE MIND. By a Cynic. We are told in Holy Writ that man was made in God's own image, which assertion we cannot deny ; but our creator is undoubtedly perfect, and we are not. I have never yet, in my expe rience, met with inan or woman who possessed a perfectly organised brain. Diogenes, as we are told in history, spent a life in search ing' for an honest man. We require a second Diogenes to search for a sane one. The existence of the one appears to be equally incompatible with the laws of Nature with tho other. Eccentricity, although not pronounced mania, ia, as the word implies, the result of a somewhat illcon ditioned cerebral organization — a desire to do' that which your follows condemn, and to do not that which is practised almost invariably by others. Eccentrics are out of the circle of their fellow men, consequently it cannot be said of them that they possess an evenly balanced mind. Daily wo meet with examples of thi3 kind of perversion of cerebral faculties. In m...
