FARMING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 11 March 1904

FARMING NOTES. One hour of systemat: c, , scientific work will accompli ;h more than three of the 'auv old way' style of farming. I The road problem is verv largely a question of drainage. The first problem in the' majk- ' ing of good roads is to get rnd of the water. j ' The man with the milk ; bucket rules. s '. An impossibility — to get % milk while starving a cow. f Rancid butter is often caused from an imperfect separation of the buttermilk In all breeds the milk te comes heavier as the milkii ig season is prolonged. The cow's udder should always be washed or spong :d ! off clean before commend: ig to milk. Frequent, stirring of the cream will largely obviate white specks in*the butter.

FRESH EGGS A YEAR OLD. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 11 March 1904

FRESH EGGS A YEAR OLD. It was recently stated that chickens had been hatched from eggs that had been pre served for 1 2 mouths. In order to verify this, the following ex periment has been carried out: Twelve eggs were collected in June, .immediately placed in a 10 per ceijit solution of sodium silicate, an^icompletely covered by th evolution. On September 5, four eggs were, taken from the solution and marked, and, with nine other newfy laid eggs, were placed under a hen. All the newly laid eggs were hatched out:* within three weeks, but the fotin preserved eggs did not hatch. : One of these eggs was boiled and was quite fresh ; the other Ihree were broken andj the yolks fell out separately from th-e white. :The whites were whipped and became quite stiff.
