From Our Point of View. MINISTERIAL CHANGES. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 17 March 1898

From Our Point of View. MINISTERIAL CHANGES. Like the poor we have Ministerial changes ever with us, and when a shuffling of the Ministerial pack takes place surprises are sometimes in store. When Sir H. Tozer was named for the Agent-Generalship different people thought different things, but the majority came to but one conclu- sion, and that was that the late Home Secretary's peculiar talents would find more ample scope in London than in an undeveloped colony such as Queensland. As Agent-General he will be able to give reins to his im- agination, and if, as will probably be the case, new arrivals from ''Home" fail to recognise this colony after hear- ing what the Agent-General has had to say about it, we can find consola- tion in the fact that it will take both time and money to get back to Eng- land again. It is a pity that Sir Horace took.to politics; he is a splendid novelist spoiled. He would have out-Haggarded Haggard in his imaginative flights with ease, but Fate made him a p...

Mr Hobson wrote asking thrt a road 20 feet wide be constructed from the terminus of Wharf Street to wharf lease bounded on one side by Alliga- tor Creek, and on the other by lease 177, and that in the event of his appli- cation being granted, a new industry beneficial to the district would prob- ably be established. If the Council desired it, he would give substantial guarantees for the payment of interest on the cost of the toad, but he thought considering the long time during which rates had been paid on the lease, no interest should be demanded. NOTES AND NOTICES. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 17 March 1898

NOTES AND NOTICIA -^-? - It takes eight tons of sugar beet to make one ton of sugar. One acre will grow about fifteen tons beetroot, for which the farmer will require 20s. per ton to pay bim for his trouble and expense, and to lea\e him a moderate profit. This means the beetroot alone will cost £8 per ton, exclusive of the cost of pro- duction, say ¿i a ton, total cost, £10 per ton of raw sugar. The average selling price of beet-root sugar, 88 per cent, analysis, for 1897 was £8 15s. There is, therefore, no hope of beetroot cultivation in England until the bounties are abolished. If that were done, it would be the salvation of the British farmer. Au exploring party are endea- vouring to recover the bodies of the other missing men. The rescue party are engaged bratticing; until that is sufficiently far advanced nothing can be done to reach the entombed men, as thc poisonous gases keep . driving the rescue party back. Only brattic- ing will cause sufficient ventilation to counteract the effects'of noxious gases. Some colliery managers are of opinion that a second explosion may take place, and that most probably the pit is so extensively on fire that the men have been roasted alive. The Minister of mines, accompanied by Government Inspectors and others, descended the pit and made an inspection of that part ...
