MELTON CRICKET ULUB V. SUNBUR.Y JUN1ORS. On Saturday last the Helton cricketers gaineda decided victory over the Sun bury Juniors on the ground of' the former. The weather, although some what cold, was bright and fine. The home team won the toss and decided to send the Juniors to the wicket, who commenced very badly, losing D. Asker for 2, J. Baines for 3, J. Walsh for 1. G. Elliott and R. Carse for " ducks," and G. Hartley for 2. With six wicket. down for ten and the best of the bats men out in a very short space of time tihe retrieving of the lost ground was impossible and the remainingfour batsmen only made a miserable total of 35. Alb. Clayton with nine was top score and deserves comment for the manner in which he held up the wickets under the unfortunate circumstances, He opened the day's play and was the last batsman to retire being caught by Campbell off A. Shebler's trunnlling. A. F. Board man was caught off a very low and difficult ball by Burnip in the slips for five, and ...

HE LIKED WADING. The Bank President and the College Graduate Plunge In. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 23 December 1893

HE LIKED WADING. The Bank President and the College Grad uate Plunge In. A stout gettleman well on to 60 years was in the throng of Saturday afternoon visitors at the Produce Exchange baths yesterday afternoon. He told everybody that he'd had a hard week. He said he was a bank president. All the attendants seemed to know him. He knew all the at tendants too. They were Tom and Jim and Pete to him. He wanted everybody to understand that he'd had a hard week. Every newcomer was corralled and impressed with the fact. Then he said he wanted some one to take his hand and wade through the pool with' wide, with 5 feet of salt water. He wanted to wade in, new summer suit and all. It would rest him and make him forget his hard week, he said, if somebody would take his hand and wade in with him. "It'll make me feel like a boy again," said the alleged bank president. "We used to wade in clothes and all when I was a boy," he added when his ap peal was not heeded. While he was looking for some on...

BIc /ust aid '..r 'zý±. SUMn3UORY, SAT RUAY. DIcEumc a 23, 1893. To-MORROW will be Christmas Eve. In accordance rith a time-honoured custom we bid all our readers a Merry. Ohristmas, The time is gone, when Christmas was ushered in by the singing of the Waits in the streets. Not many of us can recollect the snow man of the boyhood of England, made out of the frozen vapour time out of mind associated with this season of the year, and with juvenile art built till the thaws of January should wash him away into the gutters. Gone too are the markets decked out with holly, and the crowds of people halving their shillings betwaeu it and the misletoe happy resorce of bashful lovers to tell their amorous tale. And the Ghristmas pudding' too, only linger like an exotic whose digestion is happily still un touched by the ravages of time. How splendid it was to look at in our boyish days, as it was brought into the room the dish flanked with fires of burning brandy. And then those snapdragons, wh...

GETTING IT DONE. It Is a Simple Affair if You Only Know How. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 23 December 1893

It Is a Simple ARi ir i? f Yo Only Know Sow. "It's strange I can't get mywife to mend my clothes," r. marked Mr. Bridle disgust-' wedly. "I asked her to sew the buttons on this vet this morning, and she has never touched it." "You asked her?"-observed Mr. Norris, with a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Yes. What else should I do?" "You haven't been married very long, and perhaps you'll take a pointer. from me," remarked Mr. Norris, with a fatherly asi. "Never ask a woman to mend any thing. That's fatal." "!Why, what do you mean?" "Do as I do. When I want to have a shirt mended, for instance, I take it in my hand and hunt up my wife. 'Where's that rag bag, Mrs. Norris?' I demand fiercely. " 'What do you want the ragbag for?' she says suspiciously. " 'I want to throw this shirt away. It's all worn out,' I reply. " 'Let me see It,' she demands. "But I'put the garment behind mhy back. " 'No, my dear,' I answer. 'There is no use of your attempting to do anything with it. It needs'- " 'Let...

Imitations of American Manufactures. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 23 December 1893

ImitaU?loi of Ameri.u Manuofatures. Consuls have become weary of calling attention to frauds dangerous to the tade of the United States which are conducted on a gigantic scale in Europe. The Germans reproduce American sew Ing machines, stoves and all sorts of tools, substituting iron for steel. They mark them with the names and brands of Yankee manufacturers and send them to South America, Africa and all over the world. Though of wretched quality they are cheap and actually crowd out the real American goods. In this fash $on iron machetes are substituted for our own steel ones in South America, and Colt's and Remington's revolvers are burlesqued, as one might say, in the cheapest possible materials. American machines are taken apart, and the pieces are copied with iron castings, which are put together to form clumsy counter feits. This is done with all of the finest agricultural implements. The imitations lead the observer to speculate as to the probable period of time during which ...

A Field For Missionary Effort. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 23 December 1893

A Field For Missionary Effort. If 'the American missionaries are thrown out of' China in retaliation for the Geary law, it is to be hoped that the American board- will arrange to main tain them all for a time in the Pacific states. There seems to be a great op portunity there for missionary effort. Missionaries who have lived long in China may be expected to know more about the Chinese than even the Califor nians do. If they tackled the Californi anq, one of two things might be expected to happen. Either they would convert the Californians to better sentiments about the Chinese, or the Californians would convince them that their anti Chinese persuasions are justified. In the latter case the missionaries could be brought east to correct the views of our part of the country, since it is important that whatever are the right views about the Chinese the whole country should hold them. To have one section of the land maintain views of cheap labor which all the reformers in the rest of th...

Dealing With An Honest Man. "Here's your fare," said a gentleman to a Finnish peasant who had driven him for three hours through the woods, and he handed him four shillings. And when he was told he might keep it for his honesty he slightly nodded his thanks with the dignity of one of nature's gentolemen.-"- uss~ia Characteristics."
