Shropshire Sheep. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 July 1896

Shropshire Sheep. At the last Sheepbreeders' show in Sydney, the Shropshire sheep came well to the front. Mr. G. H. Allan, Singleton, took three prizes with his splendid sheep of that breed. The Hon. Thos. Brunton, President of the Victorian Royal Agricultural Society, and Mr. John See, M.L.A., President of the N. S. Wales Agricultural So ciety, combined to offer a prize of 10 guineas for a pen of the best Shrop shire sheep of any age, for the Sheep breeders' Show of 1897. In the present issue our New Zealand correspondent makes a very pertinent remark on the subject of the Shropshires, and the breed is evidently a coming one for this country. Perkins (to Jenkins) : I heard this morning that Barlow has been ar rested. What has he done 1 Jenkins : Everybody.

Rouseabout. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 July 1896

Rouseabout. Our friend has come again ! We publish his letter just to show that we have no ill feeling in the matter. When he comes to town, we'll be glad to have a yarn with him, for he's evidently a decent chap. Here's his lettter : — Sir, ?-?' Behold how great a fire a little spark kindleth/' I deeply regret that a former note of mine written purely in a spirit of banter (and which I did not dream would be published) should have caused you real annoyance or evoked the ire of any of your readers. Your nationality now stands revealed — a Caledonian stern and wild. I have heard that Scotchmen can never see a joke ; but that grand old Scotchman, Scott, uttered a solemn fact when he wrote — '? Oh ! what a tangled web we weave When first we practice to deceive ' — a newspaper man. In fancy I had pictured a certain free and easy dare devil gossip familiar with perils by land and sea, a man who could fight greasers in Santa Cruz and ' Deigos ' in Valparaiso, who had been tracked by Red I...

Travelling Stock Routes. TO THE EDITOR " S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 17 July 1896

TravellingStock Routes. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL. '' Sir, — Travelling stock reserves — another name for a dust bed on a sheep walk throughout New South Wales. There are on nearly every route good reserves, but wherever you go, you hear, oh so and so has it rented with thousands of sheep on it. Everyone knows you may as well have millions of caterpillers or even rabbits cannot make the country in a worse state than overstocking with sheep. If the Government do not cancel! the re serves and leave them for the purpose they were intended, travelling bul locks will soon be a thing of the past in New South Wales. Yours, etc., A QUEENSLANDER. Nance : ' Jack Merton proposes in this letter. I wonder if he really loves me ; he has only known me a week,' The Brother : ' Oh, then perhaps he does.'

SOME WINTER CLOTHES. It is admitted on all hands that such things are desirable, that as the temperature 'gets lower and the air less genial something warmer should bo worn. And so when the colder weather cornea, folk begin to cast about, to rub their noses, so to speak, against the Various tailors' windows, and, in a fashion, to go into committee of ways and me ins. Onr. .man has THIS to spend, while another has THAT ; one fancies a loud style of a kind that takes a couple of suits to show the design because of the largeness of the pattern, whilst others, of retiring disposition and quiet character, seek something in the way of a PEPPER : and SALT mixture, a neat check, or a cloth of more or less sombre shade. And the ; majority of men in quest of WINTER CLOTHES make their way, allow us to say, ! wisely, to ANTHONY HORDERN'S, where the choice is unlimited, the patterns ever so varied, and the price extremely low. The following are made of WINTER WEIGHT SERGERETTE. and offer splendi...

The Tick Scare TO THE EDITOR " S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 21 July 1896

The Tick Scare TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — Very alarming accounts appearing almost daily in the papers about the spread of ticks and of many losses of. 'jattlu, I venture to a^!c space for a t't-w lines about ticks, for if the alarmists only are allowed a hearing there is every probability of ' panic legislation ' and some more most drastic proclamati?ns and quarantines. Par be it from me, who am a New South Wales stock-owner, to oppose due precautions and preventions if necessary, but I deprecate the ' panic legislation ' till it has been fully established (1) that ticks are as deadly as asserted ; (2) that ticks are checkable by quarantine or destroy - able by clipping, etc. ; (3) that the ticks which are reported as so des tructive ia North Queensland are a new variety unknown in New South Wales. I throw no doubt on the statements that there have been some hopes of cattle in and around Towns ville, Bowen, Casino and Ingham in Queensland, but I would point out th...
